UVA GPA Calculator

Pick your UVA school, then enter this semester’s courses with their credits and grades. Add your record so far to see your cumulative GPA, your standing, the Dean’s List and graduation honors.

Your unofficial transcript in SIS shows your cumulative GPA and the credits behind it; grade points give the exact result. Count only UVA courses with a letter grade: leave out transfer and test credit, and Credit/No Credit. Leave the record blank to work out this semester alone.

Retaking a course? In its Retake box, pick the grade you had before. For a D+, D, D- or F, the College counts only the higher of the two grades, for the first 9 credits you retake, as long as both attempts are UVA letter grades and the retake is from Fall 2025 on. Retake a C- or better and the first grade stays in your GPA. A retake from before Fall 2025 counts as a plain course, so leave it on No retake. The tool assumes you haven’t used any of the 9 credits yet.

Good academic standing

A 3.394 semester GPA on at least 12 earned credits, with no more than one grade of C- or below, meets the College’s good academic standing.

  • Grade points: 54.3 this term, 144.9 in total
  • Credits: 16 this term, 43 in total
  • Retake credits used: 3 of the first 9

Dean’s List: not this semester. It has a 3.394 GPA (under 3.500). The College asks for a semester GPA of 3.500 or better on at least 15 graded credits, with no F, NC or NG; Credit/No Credit courses don’t count toward the 15.

Graduation honors: Distinction starts at 3.600. Your cumulative GPA is 3.370.

Plan ahead: to reach a 3.50 cumulative GPA, you need at least a 3.88 next term on 15 credits.

UVA GPA rules at a glance

  • UVA grades on a 4.0 scale with plus and minus steps. An A+ and an A both earn 4.0 grade points, an A- 3.7, a B+ 3.3, a B 3.0, a B- 2.7, a C+ 2.3, a C 2.0, a C- 1.7, a D+ 1.3, a D 1.0, a D- 0.7 and an F 0.0.
  • Your GPA is your total grade points divided by your GPA credits. An F counts in the GPA but earns no credit. CR, NC, S, U, W, AU, IN and NG stay out of it. Grades from other schools don’t count either; only the credits transfer.
  • Retake a course you got a D+, D, D- or F in, and only the higher of the two grades counts in your GPA, for the first 9 credits you retake. Both attempts have to be UVA letter grades, and the retake has to be from Fall 2024 on, or from Fall 2025 on if you’re in the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • The Dean’s List needs at least 15 graded credits in a semester and no F, NC or NG. The semester GPA line is 3.40 in Engineering, 3.50 in the College, 3.70 in Architecture, Batten, Nursing and the School of Education and Human Development, and 3.75 in McIntire and Data Science.
  • In the College, good academic standing takes a semester GPA of at least 1.800 on 12 or more earned credits, with no more than one grade of C- or below.
  • The College awards a degree “with distinction” at a cumulative 3.600, and Engineering awards distinction from 3.400, high distinction from 3.600 and highest distinction from 3.800. UVA doesn’t use Latin honors.
  • Every UVA bachelor’s degree needs a GPA of at least 2.000 in the courses required to graduate.

How to use the UVA GPA calculator

Use it as a UVA grade calculator for your whole semester. It takes five steps.

  1. Pick your school. The school sets the retake options, the Dean’s List line, the honors levels and the standing rules the calculator checks.
  2. Enter your courses. Give each one its credits and the grade you earned or expect. A Credit/No Credit course goes in as CR or NC, and it won’t touch your GPA.
  3. Mark any retakes. In the Retake box, pick the grade you had the first time. Leave it on No retake for a course you’re taking for the first time, or one you repeated before your school’s start term.
  4. Add your record so far. It’s optional. With your UVA GPA and the credits behind it, the tool becomes a UVA cumulative GPA calculator and can place you on your school’s graduation honors ladder.
  5. Read the results. You get the semester and cumulative GPA to three decimals, a Dean’s List check, your standing, your honors band and, if you enter a target, the GPA you need next term to reach it.

A worked example

The calculator opens with this semester filled in, for a College student with a 3.120 GPA on 30 credits:

CourseCreditsGradeGrade points
Calculus I4B+ (3.3)13.2
Introduction to Psychology3A- (3.7)11.1
General Chemistry I3B (3.0)9.0
Writing and Rhetoric3A (4.0)12.0
Spanish 1020, retaking a D3B (3.0)9.0
This semester1654.3

The semester GPA is 54.3 ÷ 16 = 3.394. For the cumulative GPA, the old D in Spanish comes out of the record because the new B is higher. Its 3 credits and 3.0 grade points leave, so the total becomes (93.6 − 3.0 + 54.3) ÷ (30 − 3 + 16) = 144.9 ÷ 43 = 3.370.

A 3.394 misses the College’s 3.50 Dean’s List line. Change Calculus I to an A- and the semester rises to 55.9 ÷ 16 = 3.494, which is still short in the College but clears the 3.40 line Engineering uses. One semester, two verdicts, which is why the calculator asks for your school first.

Where to find your credits and GPA in SIS

Open your unofficial transcript in SIS. It lists every course with its credits and grade, and your cumulative GPA. Enter that GPA and its credits as your record so far, then add this semester’s courses. If you’ve retaken a course, check which grade SIS shows in the GPA before you mark it here. Academic warning shows up on your advising transcript in SIS, not on the official transcript.

UVA grading scale: grade points from A+ to F

UVA’s official grading scale is in the Undergraduate Record. It gives every letter a fixed value in grade points per credit, written to three decimals. The scale has been the same since Fall 1979.

GradeGrade pointsCounts in the GPAEarns credit

F0.000YesNo

An A+ is worth no more than an A, so a UVA GPA tops out at 4.000. Calculators that score an A+ as 4.33 will overstate a UVA transcript. The one exception at UVA is the School of Law, where an A+ carries 4.3, but this calculator is for undergraduates.

Grades that don’t count in your UVA GPA

These marks appear on the transcript but carry no grade points:

  • CR (credit) and S (satisfactory) earn credit but stay out of the GPA.
  • NC (no credit) and U (unsatisfactory) earn nothing and stay out of the GPA too. An NC still rules you out of that semester’s Dean’s List, and in the College both count as low grades for academic standing.
  • W (withdrawal) and AU (audit) earn no credit and no grade points.
  • IN (incomplete) and NG (no grade reported) aren’t final. An undergraduate incomplete turns into an F 35 days after the last day of exams unless your instructor allows longer; in the School of Architecture it’s five days unless an Incomplete Grade form is on file.

Percentages and letter grades

The Undergraduate Record’s grading table lists no percentages, so UVA has no university-wide rule that turns a 70% or a 90% into a letter. The cutoffs depend on the course. The School of Nursing is the one that publishes its own: A+ is 100, A 95–99, A- 90–94, B+ 87–89, B 83–86, B- 80–82, C+ 77–79, C 73–76, C- 70–72, D+ 67–69, D 63–66, D- 60–62 and F 59 or below.

So a 70% in a Nursing course is a C-, worth 1.7 grade points, not the 2.0 many people expect. If you need a letter on a different school’s scale, the letter grade GPA calculator converts percentages and letters side by side.

How UVA calculates your GPA

Your UVA GPA is calculated in two steps. Multiply each course’s grade value by its number of credits to get its grade points, which some schools call quality points. Then divide the total by the credits applied toward the GPA. A 4-credit B+ adds 13.2 grade points and a 1-credit A adds 4.0.

GPA = total grade points ÷ credits applied toward the GPA

Only UVA courses with a letter grade enter the sum. A course you took Credit/No Credit adds credits to your degree but nothing to the GPA. An F does the opposite: its credits go into the bottom of the fraction with no points on top, which is why one F pulls a GPA down so hard.

Semester GPA and cumulative GPA

Your semester GPA uses one term’s courses; your cumulative GPA uses every graded UVA course you’ve taken, with the retake rule applied. The Dean’s List and most standing checks look at the semester GPA. Graduation honors and the 2.000 you need to graduate look at the cumulative GPA, and so does Architecture’s standing rule.

Three decimals, and results close to a line

UVA prints grade points to three decimals, and the calculator shows every GPA the same way, rounded to the nearest thousandth. UVA doesn’t publish whether SIS rounds or cuts a GPA at the third decimal, so if your result sits within a thousandth of a line such as 3.500 or 1.800, check SIS before you count on it.

Transfer, AP and test credit

Transfer credit from another institution brings credits, never grades: the Record says transferred grades “do not affect the student’s cumulative grade point average,” and a course only transfers with a C or better. AP and other test credit works the same way.

In the College and in Batten, repeating at UVA a course you already have test credit for drops the test credit, and the UVA grade goes into your GPA instead. Repeating a course you have transfer credit for works the other way in the College: the UVA grade stays out of the GPA. Data Science counts the UVA grade for courses transferred before you entered the school.

Major GPA

UVA doesn’t keep a major GPA for you, so working one out is up to you. The method is the same as for your overall GPA, using only the courses that count for the major and only letter grades. To get one here, enter only your major courses and leave the record blank. Check your department’s own list of what counts, since programs such as Batten set a minimum GPA in the courses required for the major.

Repeating a course at UVA

Since Fall 2024, UVA has let undergraduates replace a low grade in the GPA by taking the course again. The University Regulations in the Undergraduate Record set the rule:

  • It covers courses where you earned a D+, D, D- or F.
  • Both attempts remain on your transcript, but only the higher of the two grades counts in your GPA. If the second grade is lower, the first one stays in and the new one counts nowhere.
  • It applies to the first 9 credits of courses you repeat. Past that, both grades count.
  • Both the original and the repeat have to be completed at UVA and taken for a letter grade.
  • The repeat has to be attempted in Fall 2024 or later. For College of Arts & Sciences students the start is Fall 2025.
  • A repeat doesn’t change an academic warning or suspension you’ve already received, even though it changes the GPA behind it.

Retakes of courses you passed with a C- or better are left to each school, and the policies differ a lot:

SchoolRetaking a course you passed with a C- or better
College of Arts & SciencesOnly the first grade counts in the GPA; only the repeat counts toward the 120 credits
Education and Human DevelopmentThe original grade stays in your GPA
EngineeringBoth grades count in your GPA
ArchitectureBoth grades count; you can repeat a course only once
BattenOnly the higher grade counts, inside the same 9-credit total as D and F repeats; one repeat per course
McIntireNot allowed: McIntire doesn’t let you repeat a course you passed with a C- or above
Nursing, Data ScienceOnly the University rule for D+, D, D- and F applies; Nursing allows one repeat

The calculator builds each school’s options into the Retake box, and it treats all 9 of your retake credits as unused. Talk to your advising dean before you repeat a course: it can slow your progress to the degree, and not every repeat brings the GPA up.

Dean’s List GPA at UVA, school by school

There’s no single UVA Dean’s List. Each school publishes its own after every fall and spring semester, and the University sets the floor for all of them: at least 15 credits of graded coursework, with Credit/No Credit courses left out of the 15, and no F, NC or NG that semester. The GPA line is each school’s own:

SchoolSemester GPAAlso needs
College of Arts & Sciences3.5015 graded credits
Engineering and Applied Science3.4015 graded credits passed
Architecture3.7015 graded credits
Education and Human Development3.7015 graded credits
Batten School3.7015 graded credits
Nursing3.7015 graded credits
McIntire School of Commerce3.7515 graded credits passed
Data Science3.7515 graded credits passed

Students on a reduced course load approved by the Student Disability Access Center qualify with 7 or more graded credits passed and their school’s GPA line. The calculator checks the standard 15-credit rule.

Academic warning and suspension at UVA

Academic warning is UVA’s name for what used to be called academic probation. You land on it after a fall or spring semester that misses your school’s standards for good academic standing, and two such semesters in a row usually lead to academic suspension. A first suspension keeps you away for at least a semester, often a full year, and a second one is final. Each school writes its own lines.

College of Arts & Sciences

A full-time College student is in good academic standing after a semester with:

  • at least 12 credits earned,
  • a semester GPA of at least 1.800, and
  • no more than one final grade of C- or below.

Miss any of them and you’re on academic warning; your advising dean reaches out to build an academic success plan. A second semester in a row on warning makes you subject to suspension, and so does earning fewer than 9 grade points in any one semester. Part-time students only need the 1.800, and students on an approved reduced course load are judged without the 12-credit minimum.

One wording note: the 2026–2027 Undergraduate Record says “no more than one final grade of C- or below,” while the College’s own Good Academic Standing page says “no more than one grade below C-” and counts NC and U as grades below C-. The calculator follows the Record, so a C- counts as a low grade here; ask your advising dean if a single C- decides your semester.

Engineering and Applied Science

Engineering puts you on academic warning after any fall or spring semester with a GPA below 2.000, or after two failing grades in a required course. If you’re already on warning, a semester in which both your semester and cumulative GPA are below 2.000 leads to suspension, usually for one semester, and so do three failing grades in a required course. You can appeal a first suspension.

The other schools

SchoolGood standing each semesterSuspension
McIntireAt least 12 graded credits and a semester GPA of 2.00A semester GPA under 1.80, or two warning semesters in a row
ArchitectureA cumulative GPA of at least 2.0Two semesters in a row out of good standing
Education and Human DevelopmentAt least 12 credits, a semester GPA of 1.8 and at most one grade below C-A second semester out of good standing after a warning
Data ScienceA semester GPA of at least 1.800 on 12 or more creditsTwo warning semesters in a row
NursingFirst year: a semester GPA of 1.8 and at most one grade below C-. Later years: a semester GPA of 2.0 and at least a C- in every required nursing courseTwo warning semesters, fewer than 9 credits in a semester, or two D’s or one F in the professional courses
BattenAt least 12 credits, no more than one grade below C-, a Batten GPA of 2.500 in the courses for the major and at least a C in every core courseTwo semesters in a row out of good standing, or fewer than 9 grade points in a semester
Continuing and Professional StudiesSet by each degree program

The calculator checks the parts it can see from your grades: GPA lines, credit counts, low grades and grade points. It can’t see which of your courses are required nursing or Batten core courses, so read those parts of its verdict as a starting point.

Financial aid and your GPA

Keeping financial aid is a separate test. Federal aid, Virginia state grants and UVA’s own grants and scholarships all require satisfactory academic progress, which means meeting a GPA standard and a credit-hours standard. The University checks both at the end of every term.

Meeting them doesn’t protect your place, though. The Record warns that a student can qualify for aid and still not be allowed to keep enrolling because they fell out of good standing in their school. The calculator checks only your school’s standing, and the financial aid office publishes the aid numbers.

Graduating with distinction or honors at UVA

UVA marks high achievement on the diploma with distinction or honors, never with cum laude and its Latin relatives. The lines sit on your cumulative GPA at graduation:

SchoolLevels and cumulative GPA
College of Arts & SciencesWith distinction: 3.600
Engineering and Applied ScienceDistinction 3.400, high distinction 3.600, highest distinction 3.800
Batten SchoolDistinction 3.400, high distinction 3.600, highest distinction 3.800
Continuing and Professional StudiesDistinction 3.400, high distinction 3.600, highest distinction 3.800, on all UVA coursework
ArchitectureHonors 3.600, high honors 3.750, highest honors 3.900
Education and Human DevelopmentHonors 3.600, high honors 3.750, highest honors 3.900
NursingWith distinction: 3.750
Data ScienceDistinction: 3.75
McIntire School of CommerceDistinction: 3.8, on graded coursework taken while enrolled in McIntire

Two programs work differently. In the College, a Distinguished Majors Program or the Honors program in Philosophy or Government needs a cumulative 3.400, and the level comes from your thesis committee or department. Nursing’s Distinguished Majors Program awards distinction at 3.400 and highest distinction at 3.750.

Credit/No Credit at UVA and your GPA

A course taken Credit/No Credit never changes your GPA. A CR adds credits toward the degree; an NC adds nothing. You pick the option when you register, and the instructor can refuse it. The limits depend on your school:

SchoolCredit/No Credit limits
College of Arts & SciencesNo more than two CR/NC courses a semester, not counting physical education, and at most 24 CR/NC credits toward the degree (18 for second-year transfers, 12 for third-year transfers). Not for a major, minor, competency or area requirement, and you can’t repeat a graded course as CR/NC.
Education and Human DevelopmentAt most 24 CR/NC credits toward the degree and no more than 6 in one semester, except in the student-teaching semester
ArchitectureOne CR/NC course a semester, for open electives only
NursingUp to 6 credit hours
Engineering and Applied ScienceOnly courses outside your degree program; most Engineering courses are letter-graded only
McIntire School of CommerceCommerce (COMM) courses can’t be taken CR/NC
Batten SchoolNot for the Batten major, minor or general education requirements

Credit/No Credit courses also don’t count toward the 15 graded credits the Dean’s List needs, so a CR can cost you the list even though it can’t lower your GPA.

Raising your UVA GPA

Add your current GPA and credits, enter a target GPA, and the calculator works out what you need next term. In the worked example, a College student at 3.370 on 43 credits needs at least a 3.88 on the next 15 credits to reach a cumulative 3.50. It gets harder as the credits pile up: a 4.0 semester of 15 credits lifts a 3.10 on 60 credits to 3.28, but the same semester only lifts a 3.10 on 90 credits to 3.23.

The fastest lever is the retake rule. Replacing an F with a B in a 3-credit course takes 3 credits with no points out of your record and puts 9 points in their place, which moves a GPA far more than a new B would. With only 9 credits to use, spend them on the F’s and D’s that cost you most, and check your school’s start term first.

GPA to get into UVA

UVA’s Office of Undergraduate Admission is direct about it: “We don’t have a minimum GPA.” Its FAQ explains that a cumulative GPA says little about how hard your courses were or whether your grades improved, so there’s no cutoff to calculate against.

UVA doesn’t publish an average high school GPA for its first-years either: the GPA items in its 2025–2026 Common Data Set are left blank, so the averages quoted online are estimates. This calculator is built for courses taken at UVA. To work out a GPA from your high school transcript, the high school grade point calculator handles weighted and unweighted grades.

How this calculator works

This University of Virginia GPA calculator applies the grading scale and the repeat rule in the University Regulations of the Undergraduate Record 2026–2027, and each undergraduate school’s own rules from its section of the Record: the retake options, the Dean’s List line, academic standing and graduation honors. It runs the GPA calculation on your exact grade points and credits and rounds each result to three decimals.

It assumes your retake falls inside your school’s start term and that you haven’t used any of the 9 retake credits yet. It can’t know which courses count for your major, which are required nursing or Batten core courses, or the standing rules of an SCPS program, so it tells you when a verdict depends on those. SIS holds your official GPA.

Everything runs in your browser; the page stores nothing you enter. Calculate Your Grade isn’t connected with the University of Virginia in any way, so SIS and your dean’s office have the final word.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA is a B+ at UVA?

A B+ is worth 3.3 grade points per credit at UVA, which makes a 3.3 GPA a B+ average. In a 3-credit course that’s 9.9 grade points. A B is 3.0 and an A- is 3.7, so a B+ sits a little closer to a B.

Is a 3.7 GPA good at UVA?

Yes. A 3.7 semester meets the Dean’s List line in every school that has one except McIntire and Data Science, which ask for 3.75. As a cumulative GPA it clears the College’s 3.600 line for graduating with distinction and Engineering’s 3.600 line for high distinction.

Is a 3.5 GPA good at UVA?

It’s a strong GPA. A 3.50 semester is exactly the College’s Dean’s List line and clears Engineering’s 3.40, though the other six schools want 3.70 or 3.75. For admission, UVA says it has no minimum GPA.

Is a 3.4 GPA good at UVA?

It’s a solid one. A 3.40 semester is exactly Engineering’s Dean’s List line, and a cumulative 3.400 is the first distinction level in Engineering, Batten and Continuing and Professional Studies. It falls short of the College’s 3.50 Dean’s List line and of the 3.600 the College asks for to graduate with distinction.

Is a 70% a 2.0 GPA at UVA?

Not necessarily. UVA has no university-wide percentage scale, so the letter for a 70% depends on the course. In the School of Nursing, which publishes its scale, 70–72% is a C-, worth 1.7 grade points.

Is a 93 an A at UVA?

Not always. UVA sets no percentage cutoffs, so your course decides. On the School of Nursing’s scale, the only UVA scale with percentages, a 93 is an A-, worth 3.7; an A starts at 95.

Does an A+ count for more than an A at UVA?

Not for undergraduates. Both are worth 4.0 grade points, so a UVA GPA can’t go above 4.000. Only the School of Law gives an A+ 4.3.

Does an F count in your UVA GPA?

Yes. An F adds its credits to your GPA with 0.0 grade points and earns no credit toward the degree. A retake can take it out of the GPA if the retake follows UVA’s repeat rule.

Will one C ruin a 4.0 GPA at UVA?

No. Four A’s and one C on 3-credit courses make a 3.600 semester, which still clears the College’s 3.50 Dean’s List line and Engineering’s 3.40, though not the 3.70 or 3.75 the other schools ask for. On a record of 60 credits at 4.000, that semester leaves you at 3.920. A C can’t be retaken for a better GPA in most schools, because the repeat rule starts at D+; Batten is the exception.

Do transfer or AP grades count in your UVA GPA?

No. Transfer and test credit bring credits only, and their grades never enter your UVA GPA. A course only transfers if you earned a C or better.

Does retaking a class replace the old grade at UVA?

For a D+, D, D- or F, yes: only the higher grade counts in your GPA, though both stay on the transcript. The retake has to be from Fall 2024 on (Fall 2025 in the College), both attempts must be UVA letter grades, and it covers your first 9 retake credits.

How many credits can you retake for a higher grade at UVA?

Nine. Only the first 9 credits of D+, D, D- and F retakes get the higher-grade rule; past that, both grades go into your GPA. In Batten those same 9 credits also cover retakes of courses you passed with a C- or better.

What GPA do you need to make the Dean’s List at UVA?

Your school sets the line. Engineering’s is the lowest at 3.40, the College asks for 3.50, McIntire and Data Science for 3.75, and Architecture, Batten, Nursing and the School of Education and Human Development for 3.70. Every one of them also needs 15 or more graded credits that semester, and an F, NC or NG rules you out.

What GPA do you need to graduate from UVA?

A 2.000. The University requires at least a 2.000 GPA in the courses required for graduation, and every undergraduate school restates it; the College counts all graded courses offered for the degree.

What’s the average GPA at UVA?

UVA doesn’t publish one. Its 2025–2026 Common Data Set leaves the high school GPA questions blank, and the admission office says it has no minimum GPA, so any average you see quoted is an estimate. What UVA does publish are the lines this calculator checks: a Dean’s List line from 3.40 to 3.75 depending on your school, distinction or honors from 3.400 up, and the 2.000 you need to graduate.

What GPA puts you on academic warning at UVA?

In the College, a semester GPA under 1.800, fewer than 12 earned credits or two or more grades of C- or below. Engineering and McIntire use a semester GPA under 2.000, and Architecture a cumulative GPA under 2.0.

Do Credit/No Credit courses affect your UVA GPA?

No. A CR or an NC earns no grade points, so neither one moves your GPA. They do matter elsewhere: they don’t count toward the Dean’s List’s 15 graded credits, and each school caps how many you can take.

How do I check my GPA at UVA?

Open your unofficial transcript in SIS, which lists your grades and your cumulative GPA. Put that GPA and its credits into the calculator above, add this semester’s courses, and it shows where the term leaves you.

Does this calculator work for UVA Law, graduate programs, UVA Wise or the University of Amsterdam?

No. It follows the undergraduate rules of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. UVA Law gives an A+ 4.3, graduate programs follow the Graduate Record, UVA Wise has its own catalog, and the University of Amsterdam, which also goes by UvA, grades on a different scale altogether.
