What an overall grade actually is
An overall grade is one number that stands in for several separate results at once: four subjects, six modules, two terms, or a full year of coursework rolled into a single figure. That makes it a different question from the one most grade tools answer. A single class has its own grade, built from homework, quizzes and exams inside that one course. Your overall grade sits a level above that, treating each finished class or subject as one input.
It is also not a GPA. A GPA converts each result to points on a 4.0 scale and averages the points. An overall grade stays in percentages and letters, which is what you want when the question is simply what is my overall grade across everything you are taking.
How this overall grade calculator works
Every subject you enter carries two things: the grade you earned and how much that subject counts. The calculator multiplies one by the other, adds up the results, and divides by the total weight. That calculation is the weighted average formula:
Four steps get you there:
- List every subject, class or module you want included.
- Enter the percentage you earned in each one.
- Give each one a weight, either its credit value or the share of the total it represents.
- Read the overall percentage and letter at the bottom.
If your subjects all count the same, you can skip the weights entirely by switching the calculator to equal weight. It then adds your grades and divides by how many there are, which is the plain average.
Weighted or equal weight: which one do you need?
This is the choice that decides your answer, and it is worth thirty seconds of thought before you trust the number.
Use equal weight when every subject genuinely counts the same. Four classes on the same schedule, all worth the same credit, all pulling equally on your report card. This is the unweighted case, and it is what people mean when they ask for an overall grade without weights. High school and middle school subjects often work this way. So do situations where you just want to know how you are doing on average, with no institution attached to the answer.
Use weighted when they do not count the same, which is the normal case at college and university. A four credit lab science and a one credit seminar are not equal contributors, and averaging them as though they were quietly inflates whatever you scored in the small class. Weighting is also right when a syllabus tells you a term is worth 40% of the year and the rest is split across two others.
The gap between the two methods is usually small, but it is never zero, and it moves in a predictable direction. If you scored well in your heaviest subject, weighting raises your overall grade. If your best result came in the lightest one, weighting lowers it. That is the whole story, and it is why an equal weight average can flatter you.

Worked example: four subjects, one overall grade
Here is the example loaded into the calculator above. Four subjects, each with a grade and a credit value.

Divide 1,039 by 12 and the overall grade is 86.58%, a B.
Now run the same four subjects with equal weight. Add 88, 92, 79 and 85 to get 344, divide by four, and you get 86.00%, also a B. The two answers sit half a point apart because Biology, the strongest result, is also the heaviest subject at four credits. Weighting lets that good grade carry more of the total, so the weighted figure comes out higher.
Half a point sounds like nothing until your cutoff is 87 and you are arguing for a B plus.
Weighting by credits or by percentages
The calculator accepts either, and the switch above the table decides which label the column carries. The math underneath is identical, because weights only ever matter in proportion to each other.
Credits or credit hours are the college and university case. Your transcript already lists a credit value against every course, so use those numbers directly. They do not need to add up to anything in particular. Three, four, three and two work exactly as well as any other set.
Percentages suit the case where someone has told you the split: a first term worth 30%, a second worth 30%, a final block worth 40%. Enter those as the weights. They usually total 100, but nothing breaks if they do not, because the calculator divides by whatever total you actually enter rather than assuming a hundred.
Which subject is dragging your overall grade down?
An overall percentage tells you where you stand. It does not tell you what to do about it. The panel marked What each subject contributes answers the second question.
In the worked example, Math adds 22.00 to the total, Biology adds 30.67, History adds 19.75 and English adds 14.17. Those four contributions sum to the overall 86.58%.
The useful part is the comparison against your average. History is the subject furthest below it, and because it carries three credits rather than two, that shortfall costs about 1.9 points off the overall figure. Biology pulls hardest in the other direction, adding roughly 1.81. English scores below Biology but weighs only two credits, so it barely moves the total either way.
That is the difference between a weak grade and an expensive one. A poor result in a heavy subject is worth fixing first, and if you are deciding where to spend revision time, the contribution column is the honest guide.
What you still need to reach your target overall
If some of your coursework has not happened yet, you can work backwards from the grade you want. Open the panel marked What do I need on the rest? and enter the overall percentage you are aiming for, plus how much weight is still to come.
Using the same four subjects, suppose you want 90% overall and have six more credits ahead of you. Your current total is 1,039 across 12 credits, so you need 90 × 18, which is 1,620, minus 1,039, divided by 6. That comes to 96.83% average across everything remaining.
The calculator also tells you when a target has stopped being realistic. Ask it for 99% overall with six credits left and it reports that even perfect scores would top out at 91.06%. Knowing that early is more useful than finding out in June.
Percent to letter grade scale
The calculator uses the standard whole letter scale by default, and the toggle at the top switches it to plus and minus grades.

Cutoffs vary between schools, and plenty of institutions set their own. If your handbook says an A starts at 93, trust the handbook over any calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my overall grade with a calculator?
Enter each subject with its grade and its weight, then read the result. The calculator multiplies every grade by its weight, adds those products, and divides by the total weight. If everything counts equally, switch to equal weight and it simply averages your grades.
How do I average grades across different subjects?
Add the grades and divide by how many subjects there are, which is what equal weight mode does. That is only correct when the subjects genuinely count the same. If they carry different credit values, weight them instead or the answer will lean toward your smaller classes.
How do I calculate a quarter or semester grade?
Treat each quarter, term or marking period as one row. Enter the grade you finished it with and weight it by whatever share of the year it represents. If two terms and a final block are worth 30%, 30% and 40%, those are your three weights. That is also how you build a cumulative grade for a full year, and teachers can use the same setup for a whole class.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
The result is still a correct average of what you entered, because the calculator divides by your actual total rather than assuming 100. But if the missing weight belongs to a real subject, add it. A total below 100 usually means something has been left out.
Why does my result not match my school’s gradebook?
Usually rounding, different weights, or a subject counted differently than you assumed. Check the credit values on your transcript first, since one wrong weight moves the total more than a wrong grade does.
How do I convert a percentage to a letter grade?
Match it against your school’s scale. On the common whole letter scale, 90 and above is an A, the 80s are a B, the 70s a C, the 60s a D, and below 60 is an F. The plus and minus toggle splits those bands further.
Should everything count equally, or should I weight it?
Weight it whenever your subjects carry different credit values or different shares of the final grade, which is the normal situation in college. Count them equally only when they truly are equal. When in doubt, check the syllabus for credits or percentages against each subject.
Can I include subjects I have not finished yet?
Leave them out of the table, since an unfinished subject has no grade to average. Use the target panel instead: enter the overall grade you want and the weight still to come, and it works out the average you need across everything remaining.
