LSU GPA Calculator

Enter this term’s LSU courses with their hours and grades. Add your record so far to see your LSU and cumulative GPAs, your standing, the honor rolls, Latin honors and your TOPS GPA.

Your transcript lists your LSU GPA hours and quality points; quality points give the exact result. Add the hours and GPA you earned at other colleges for your cumulative GPA, and your TOPS GPA and its hours for the TOPS check. Leave the record blank to work out this term alone.

Retaking a course? In its Retake box, pick the grade you had before. LSU counts only the latest attempt in your LSU and cumulative GPAs, even when it is lower; Latin honors and TOPS still count both, and this term’s GPA uses the new grade.

Good standing

Your LSU and overall GPAs are 2.00 or higher, so you stay in good standing.

  • Quality points: 52.5 this term, 148.5 in total
  • GPA hours: 14 this term, 44 in total
  • Not in the GPA: Elective (P/F)

President’s Honor Roll: not this term. It has a 3.750 GPA (under 4.00). LSU asks for a semester GPA of at least 4.00 on 15 or more completed hours, with no I grades.

Dean’s List: this term qualifies, with a 3.750 GPA on 15 hours. LSU asks for a semester GPA of at least 3.50 but under 4.00 on 12 or more completed hours, with no I grades.

Latin honors: 3.375 is under the 3.70 line for cum laude. LSU counts every attempt here. Grades you replaced in earlier terms count too, so your honors GPA can differ from this; LSU Second Chance students aren’t eligible.

TOPS GPA: 3.64 this term. LOSFA drops every plus and minus (an A+ or A- counts 4.00, a B+ 3.00) and counts every attempt. To renew, LOSFA asks for a 2.00 TOPS GPA at the end of every term and, at the end of the academic year, 2.30 with 24 to 47 earned hours or 2.50 with 48 or more for Opportunity, and 3.00 from 24 earned hours for Performance and Honors. Add your TOPS GPA and hours so far to check yours.

Plan ahead: to reach a 3.50 LSU GPA, you need at least a 3.87 next term on 15 hours.

LSU GPA rules at a glance

  • An A+ is worth 4.3 quality points per credit hour, and LSU doesn’t cap the GPA at 4.00, so a semester of straight A+ grades averages 4.300.
  • When you retake a course, only the latest grade counts in your LSU and cumulative GPAs, even when it’s the lower of the two.
  • Every LSU GPA runs to three decimal places, rounded on the fourth, so a 3.4996 average becomes 3.500.
  • An LSU or overall GPA under 2.00 after a fall or spring semester means scholastic warning. A semester GPA under 2.00 while you’re on warning means probation, and another one on probation means a scholastic drop.
  • The President’s Honor Roll takes a 4.00 semester GPA on 15 hours. The Dean’s List takes 3.50 up to just under 4.00 on 12.
  • TOPS ignores pluses and minuses and counts every attempt, so your TOPS GPA can sit above or below your LSU GPA.

How to use the LSU GPA calculator

The calculator opens with a sample student so every result shows at once. They have a 3.200 LSU GPA on 30 GPA hours and five courses this term: Calculus I, General Chemistry, English Composition, U.S. History and a one-hour pass-fail elective. Replace the rows with your own courses and the numbers update as you type. It works as an LSU grade calculator for a whole semester rather than a single course.

  1. Enter this semester’s courses. Give each one its credit hours and the grade you earned or expect. Letter grades show their quality points, while P, NC, W and I sit in a group of their own because they stay out of the GPA.
  2. Flag retakes. For a course you’re taking again, choose your old grade in its Retake box. That first attempt then leaves your LSU GPA but stays in your Latin honors and TOPS figures.
  3. Add your record so far. Type your LSU GPA hours and quality points, or enter your current GPA at LSU with its hours. Hours and a GPA from other colleges go in the boxes underneath, beside your TOPS GPA and its hours. With the record left empty, you get this semester by itself.
  4. Choose the term type and the standing you’re on now. A summer term changes the honor-roll rules and can’t move your standing down, and the standing you start the semester on decides the next step.
  5. Plan ahead. Enter a target LSU GPA and the hours you’ll take next, and the calculator shows the semester average you’d need.

The results come in four boxes: the semester GPA, your LSU GPA, your cumulative GPA with other colleges included, and your TOPS GPA. Below them come your new standing, the President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List checks, where you stand for Latin honors, the TOPS renewal lines and next semester’s target. “What each course adds”, under the results, lists every course’s quality points and says how each retake was counted.

A worked example

Take the sample semester. Calculus I earns 5 × 3.3 = 16.5 quality points, General Chemistry 3 × 3.7 = 11.1, English Composition 3 × 4.3 = 12.9 and U.S. History 3 × 4.0 = 12.0. That’s 52.5 quality points over 14 GPA hours, a 3.750 semester GPA, and the pass-fail hour adds credit without adding quality points. With 96 quality points already earned on 30 hours, the LSU GPA becomes 148.5 ÷ 44 = 3.375. Those 15 completed hours at 3.750 put the semester on the Dean’s List.

Where to find your hours and quality points

Your grades post to Workday Student, LSU’s student system since Summer 2025, which opens from the myLSU portal. LSU counts credits in semester hours, so a three-credit course is 3 hours in the calculator. Enter the GPA hours and quality points from your Workday record for an exact result. If you only know your GPA, type it with its hours and the calculator rebuilds the quality points, which can be off by a hair because a GPA is already rounded.

LSU grading scale and quality points

The LSU grading scale gives each letter grade a fixed number of quality points per credit hour. A plus adds 0.3 to the letter and a minus takes 0.3 away, and unlike the standard 4.0 scale most colleges use, LSU lets an A+ count for more than an A.

GradeQuality points per hourIn a 3-hour course
A+4.312.9
A4.012.0
A-3.711.1
B+3.39.9
B3.09.0
B-2.78.1
C+2.36.9
C2.06.0
C-1.75.1
D+1.33.9
D1.03.0
D-0.72.1
F0.00.0

P, NC, W and I carry no quality points and stay out of the GPA. A P in a pass-fail course means C-level work, a C- or better, but an F in a pass-fail course counts like any other F. An I turns into an F unless you finish the work before the deadline to add courses in your next regular semester at LSU.

Two exceptions are worth knowing. Grades from before Fall 2015 keep the plain A to F values, because plus and minus grading started that semester. And grades from the Hebert Law Center and the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine stay out of an undergraduate GPA unless your dean approves them.

Percentages and letter grades

LSU has no university-wide percentage scale. The registrar’s plus/minus FAQ says there is no “university curve” or table of numbers each letter must match: your instructor sets the cutoffs, including where a plus or minus begins, and has to print them in the syllabus. A 93 can be an A in one course and an A- in the next, so check the syllabus before you choose a grade in the calculator.

How LSU calculates your GPA

Your LSU GPA, or grade point average, is calculated by dividing the total quality points earned by the hours you attempted. A course’s quality points (most schools call them grade points) are its credit hours times the value of its grade, and only courses with a letter grade, F included, add hours.

LSU GPA = total quality points ÷ total hours attempted

The catalog’s own example is a student with 122 quality points on 46 hours and a GPA of 2.65. Carried to three places, the way LSU records it, that’s 2.652.

Semester, LSU and cumulative GPA

LSU keeps three GPAs. Your semester GPA covers one term, your LSU GPA covers everything you’ve attempted at LSU, and your cumulative GPA, which the standing rules call your overall GPA, covers every college you’ve attended. With no work from anywhere else, the last two are the same number.

Since Summer 2025 the LSU GPA counts only LSU A&M work, the Baton Rouge campus. Before then it pooled every campus in the LSU system. Some courses only ever reach the cumulative GPA, among them classes at Southern University through the LSU-SU Cooperative Program, at Baton Rouge Community College through cross-enrollment, and through the Distance Learning Program. Enter work like that, and any transfer credit, in the other-colleges boxes, and the tool works as an LSU cumulative GPA calculator too.

You need both GPAs at 2.00 or higher to stay in good standing and to graduate. If you’re merging more than LSU and one other college, the cumulative GPA calculator for several schools takes one row per term or school and combines them.

Rounding to three decimals

LSU states every GPA to three decimal places, rounded from the fourth. If the fourth decimal is 5 or more the third goes up, and anything after the fourth is ignored, so 3.95550 becomes 3.956 and 3.95549 becomes 3.955. A GPA rule written with one decimal, such as 2.0, means 2.00. The University Medal is the one exception: there, any GPA above 4.0 counts as 4.0.

That’s why the calculator shows the semester, LSU and cumulative GPAs to three decimals. The TOPS GPA is the odd one out, because LOSFA quotes it to two decimals and never rounds up.

Repeating a course at LSU

When you repeat a course, only the most recent grade counts in your GPA and toward your degree, even if it’s lower than the grade it replaces. Credit is awarded once, and every attempt stays on your transcript. Failing the repeat of a course you’d passed costs you that course’s credit.

Not every course can be repeated freely:

  • A grade of D+ or lower lets you repeat the course once; going for a third try needs your college dean’s approval.
  • A C- or better can’t be repeated unless the course is listed as repeatable or your dean approves, and even then the credit counts once.
  • Fail a course twice at LSU and you need the dean’s approval to take it again.
  • After an F, you repeat the course on an LSU campus to earn its credit and quality points, unless the department chair and your dean approve an outside course.
  • A repeat at another college that transfers back as a direct equivalent counts as your latest attempt. If an earlier LSU attempt was an F, you need your college’s permission first.

Financial aid won’t cover a second repeat of any course you’ve already earned credit in, so plan retakes with your advisor. One line in the catalog’s grading-scale section still says repeated courses are considered in calculating GPAs, but the repeat policy and LSU’s notes on the Summer 2025 changes both say plainly that only the latest grade counts, and that’s the rule this calculator follows.

Where a retake doesn’t erase the old grade

Latin honors and TOPS both count every attempt. For honors, LSU recomputes your GPAs with every grade put back in, and TOPS never recognizes repeat-delete. So a retake can lift your LSU GPA while your honors GPA and your TOPS GPA still carry the first grade. The calculator works out all three, and its course breakdown marks each retake to show it.

Academic Renewal and LSU Second Chance

If you’ve been away from all credit-bearing coursework for at least five calendar years, you can declare Academic Renewal when you apply to come back. Your earlier college work then leaves the GPA and can’t count toward an LSU degree, though it stays on your transcript and graduate and professional schools can still use it. You’re readmitted on scholastic probation.

LSU Second Chance goes a step further for former LSU students who left without a degree. Old grades still leave the GPA, but anything at C- or better shows as a P and counts toward your hours, while a D+ or lower doesn’t. It can be used only once, it can’t be undone, and it rules out Latin honors and the University Medal.

Scholastic warning, probation and drop

LSU works out your academic standing after every fall and spring semester, and since Summer 2025 it does so by GPA rather than by quality points. Each step depends on the one you’re already on.

StandingIt starts whenIt ends when
Scholastic warningYour LSU or overall GPA is under 2.00Both GPAs reach 2.00, or a semester under 2.00 moves you to probation
Scholastic probationYou’re on warning and your semester GPA is under 2.00Both GPAs reach 2.00, or a 2.50 semester on a full-time load moves you back to warning
Scholastic dropYou’re on probation and your semester GPA is under 2.00You can apply to return, on warning, after one regular semester away

A full-time load means 12 or more hours, and the 2.50 way back from probation only applies in fall and spring. Retakes can also clear the slate: if repeated courses lift both your LSU and overall GPAs to 2.00, you’re back in good standing whatever your semester GPA was.

Summer works differently. LSU takes no negative action after a summer term, but if you make up your whole LSU and overall deficit over the summer, you return to good standing. Students facing a drop at the end of spring can try the Scholastic Drop – Summer Only program: two courses at most, at least six hours earned and a summer GPA of 3.0 or higher keep you on probation for the fall instead.

The calculator tells you how many quality points you’re short of a 2.00. An hour of A is worth 2 points more than an hour of C, and an hour of B 1 point more, so a 6-point deficit takes one 3-hour A, or six hours of B. College probation is a separate matter: your college can set its own progress rules, and its probation doesn’t appear on your transcript.

President’s Honor Roll, Dean’s List and Latin honors

The Dean’s List and the President’s Honor Roll split the top of the semester between them, so in fall or spring you can make one or the other, never both.

HonorHoursSemester GPA
President’s Honor Roll15 or more, fall or spring4.00 or higher, no I grades
Dean’s List12 or more, fall or springAt least 3.50 but under 4.00, no I grades
Dean’s List, summer term9 or more3.50 or higher, no I grades
Dean’s List, LSU Online module6 or more3.50 or higher, no I grades

The hours are college-level LSU hours you complete that semester. Courses through the Distance Learning Programs and credit by exam don’t count toward them. That leaves a gap at the top: a 4.00 semester on 12 to 14 hours is too high for the Dean’s List and too short for the President’s Honor Roll. The calculator counts letter-graded and pass-fail hours toward these totals, so leave credit by exam out of the rows.

Latin honors

For Latin honors at graduation, LSU computes two GPAs, one on all your college work and one on all your work at LSU’s campuses, with every grade included, repeated attempts too. The lower of the two decides:

  • summa cum laude at 3.90 or higher;
  • magna cum laude at 3.80 or higher;
  • cum laude at 3.70 or higher.

Here’s how a retake splits the numbers. Say you have 220.2 quality points on 60 hours, a 3.670, and that record includes a 3-hour F. This semester you retake that course for an A and add 12 more hours of A. Your LSU GPA drops the F and becomes 280.2 ÷ 72 = 3.892. Your honors GPA keeps it: 280.2 ÷ 75 = 3.736, which is cum laude rather than the magna cum laude the LSU GPA suggests.

The University Medal goes to graduates with a GPA of 4.0 or higher, all A-level grades and more than half of their degree credits earned at LSU A&M, again judged on the lower of two GPAs.

Your TOPS GPA vs your LSU GPA

TOPS is Louisiana’s state scholarship program. LOSFA, the state’s Office of Student Financial Assistance, runs it and keeps a GPA of its own. LOSFA doesn’t accept plus/minus grades or recognize repeat-delete, so LSU has to report an A+ as an A, and every attempt at every school counts: dual enrollment courses from high school once you’ve finished your first college semester, summer and remedial courses, and repeated courses.

The calculator doubles as a TOPS GPA calculator. It counts A+, A and A- as 4.00, the whole B range as 3.00, the C range as 2.00 and the D range as 1.00, keeps every attempt, and adds your TOPS GPA so far if you enter it with its hours.

AwardUnder 24 hours24 to 4748 or more
Opportunity2.002.302.50
Performance, Honors2.003.003.00

The hours are earned hours, and LOSFA checks those lines at the end of each academic year. Separately, your TOPS GPA has to stay at 2.00 or higher at the end of every term, summer included, or the award is suspended. A Performance or Honors award that ends a year under 3.00 drops to Opportunity for good, and a suspended award has two years to recover before it’s canceled. Nothing gets rounded up: LOSFA’s own example is a 2.29 that falls short of a 2.30.

The two GPAs can split either way. An A- helps your TOPS GPA, counting 4.00 instead of 3.70, while a B+ hurts it, counting 3.00 instead of 3.30. Retakes usually pull the TOPS GPA below the LSU GPA, since the first attempt never leaves it. Treat the calculator’s TOPS figure as an estimate: LOSFA works from every school’s grade reports, and its number is the one that counts.

LSU GPA requirements

  • To graduate you need a 2.00 on all your college work and a 2.00 on your work at LSU.
  • To keep federal grants, loans and work-study, you need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 when LSU checks progress after each spring semester. That GPA includes accepted transfer work and college courses you took in high school, and you also have to pass 67 percent of the hours you attempt and finish within 150 percent of your program’s length.
  • Most of LSU’s university scholarships renew on a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 24 credit hours a year (fall, wintersession and spring), checked at the end of spring; a few awards set other numbers. Miss either one and the scholarship goes on probation. It pays nothing until you meet the mark again and LSU reinstates it, and it’s canceled if you don’t make it up in the time allowed.
  • The pass-fail option opens once your GPA across LSU’s campuses reaches 2.50. It covers unrestricted electives or courses your major department approves, one course a semester and 12 hours in all, and a P means C- work or better.
  • The Ogden Honors College expects a 3.0 overall GPA to stay in good standing, and College Honors and Upper Division Honors Distinction both ask for a 3.5 in your cumulative, LSU and Honors coursework.

GPA to get into LSU

LSU’s freshman admissions page lists no GPA cutoff and reviews each application as a whole. Its admitted class had a middle 50 percent high school GPA range of 3.6 to 4.1 and an average GPA of 3.9, and applicants whose cumulative weighted high school GPA is under 3.5 have to send an ACT or SAT score.

GPA to transfer to LSU

The usual transfer route asks for 30 or more transferable hours, a 2.50 GPA on all the transferable college work you’ve attempted, and a C or better in a college English course and a college math course. LSU works that GPA out itself instead of taking your old school’s number: repeated courses and incompletes count, W, U and no-credit grades don’t, and pass, credit and satisfactory grades add hours without entering the average. That holds even when you come from another LSU campus.

To estimate it here, enter every attempt as its own row and leave the Retake box empty.

GPA to enter a senior college

To move from University College into a senior college, you need the GPA that college sets, and a few majors ask for more. Three examples:

  • Engineering wants a 2.00 LSU and cumulative GPA, and 2.50 to 2.80 for some of its majors.
  • The E. J. Ourso College of Business asks for 2.6 to 3.0 in both GPAs depending on the major, plus a business GPA of 2.3 or 2.5.
  • The Manship School of Mass Communication is competitive and gives priority to students with a 3.00 LSU GPA and a 3.00 cumulative GPA.

Your college’s section of the General Catalog has the exact list.

GPA on law and health school applications

Applying to law school or a health program through a central service? LSAC works out the GPA law schools see, and Liaison’s services, among them AACOMAS for osteopathic medicine and CASPA for physician assistant programs, work it out for many health programs. Both rebuild your GPA from your transcripts and count every grade from a repeated course. They also value grades their own way: LSAC counts an A+ as 4.33, while AACOMAS counts it as 4.0, the same as an A.

To estimate one of these GPAs, enter each attempt as its own row with the Retake box empty, and choose A instead of A+ for AACOMAS. AACOMAS’s science GPA takes biology, chemistry, physics and other science courses, but not math.

How this calculator works

This LSU GPA calculator applies the rules in Louisiana State University’s 2026-2027 General Catalog: the quality points from A+ to F, the grades left out of the GPA, the repeat policy, three-decimal rounding, scholastic warning, probation and drop, both honor rolls and Latin honors. Its TOPS GPA follows LOSFA’s TOPS renewal rules from July 2026. Every GPA calculation counts quality points and hours exactly, so nothing is rounded before the final step, where LSU’s GPAs go to three decimals and the TOPS GPA is cut to two.

Retakes are applied the way LSU applies them: the latest grade replaces the earlier one in the LSU and cumulative GPAs, while Latin honors and TOPS keep both. Standing follows the step you start the semester on, and a summer term never moves you down. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent or stored. Calculate Your Grade has no connection to Louisiana State University, so your Workday record, your college and LOSFA have the final word. LSU’s Graduate School and Law Center grading aren’t covered.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 97 an A+ at LSU?

Only if your syllabus says so. LSU has no university-wide percentage scale, so each instructor sets the cutoffs for every letter, plus and minus included. Whatever the cutoff, an A+ is worth 4.3 quality points per credit hour.

Can an LSU GPA be higher than 4.0?

Yes. LSU puts no cap on the GPA and an A+ is worth 4.3, so a term with nothing but A+ grades comes out at 4.300. Two places ignore the extra, though: the University Medal treats any GPA above 4.0 as 4.0, and TOPS counts an A+ as a 4.0. Outside LSU, LSAC counts an A+ as 4.33 on law school applications, and AACOMAS counts it as 4.0.

How many quality points is an A+ at LSU?

4.3 per credit hour. That’s 12.9 quality points in a 3-hour course and 17.2 in a 4-hour course, compared with 12.0 and 16.0 for an A.

Does LSU replace your grade when you retake a class?

Yes, in your LSU and cumulative GPAs: only the latest attempt counts, even if it’s lower. Both attempts stay on your transcript, and Latin honors and your TOPS GPA still count every attempt.

How do I calculate my cumulative GPA at LSU?

Divide your total quality points from every college you’ve attended by your total hours attempted, then round to three decimals. In the calculator, enter your LSU record and add the hours and GPA you earned at other colleges.

What is the difference between my LSU GPA and my cumulative GPA?

Your LSU GPA covers only your work at LSU, and since Summer 2025 only LSU A&M work. Your cumulative GPA adds every other college you’ve attended. You need both at 2.00 or higher for good standing and to graduate.

How do I check my GPA at LSU?

Log in to Workday Student from the myLSU portal, where your grades and academic record are kept. Official transcripts are ordered through Parchment. Enter your hours and quality points above, then add this term’s courses to see where you’ll land.

When does LSU put you on scholastic probation?

A semester GPA under 2.00 while you’re already on scholastic warning. A first LSU or overall GPA under 2.00 puts you on warning, not probation, and a semester of 2.50 or higher on a full-time load can move you from probation back to warning.

What GPA gets you on LSU’s Dean’s List?

A semester GPA of at least 3.50 but under 4.00 on 12 or more completed hours in fall or spring, with no I grades. In a summer term it takes 3.50 or higher on 9 hours, and in an LSU Online module 3.50 on 6 hours.

What is the difference between the Dean’s List and the President’s Honor Roll at LSU?

You need a 4.00 or higher on 15 or more hours for the President’s Honor Roll, and 3.50 up to just below 4.00 on 12 or more for the Dean’s List. In fall or spring you can be on one or the other, and a 4.00 on 12 to 14 hours earns neither.

What GPA do you need for Latin honors at LSU?

3.70 for cum laude, 3.80 for magna cum laude and 3.90 for summa cum laude. The lower of your all-college GPA and your LSU GPA decides, and both are worked out with every grade, retakes included.

What GPA do you need to keep TOPS at LSU?

A 2.00 TOPS GPA at the end of every term. At the end of each academic year, Opportunity needs 2.30 with 24 to 47 earned hours or 2.50 with 48 or more, and Performance or Honors needs 3.00 once you’ve earned 24 hours.

Why is my TOPS GPA different from my LSU GPA?

LOSFA drops pluses and minuses, so an A- counts 4.0 and a B+ counts 3.0, and it keeps every attempt, including retaken courses and dual enrollment grades from other schools. It also never rounds up, so a 2.299 stays under 2.30.

Is a 70% a 2.0 GPA?

Only if your syllabus makes 70 percent a C. At LSU a C is worth 2.0 quality points, a C+ 2.3 and a C- 1.7, but the university doesn’t fix which percentages earn them, so the answer depends on your instructor’s scale.

What GPA does it take to get into LSU?

There’s no GPA cutoff for freshmen: LSU reviews each application as a whole. Half of the admitted class had a high school GPA between 3.6 and 4.1, the average was 3.9, and anyone under a 3.5 weighted GPA has to send an ACT or SAT score.
