FSU GPA Calculator

This FSU GPA calculator works the way Florida State University does: an A- is worth 3.75 and a B+ 3.25, IE and GE count as an F, and both grades of a retaken course stay in your GPA. It also checks the Dean’s List, probation and Latin honors. Need a major GPA or a different school? Use the major GPA calculator.

Enter this term’s FSU courses with their hours and grades, and mark any retake. Add your FSU record and any transfer work to see your FSU and combined GPAs, your standing, the Dean’s and President’s Lists and Latin honors.

Your unofficial transcript in myFSU lists GPA Hrs and Points on its Cum GPA row; Points give the exact result. The transfer fields take the hours and GPA on the Transfer Cum row. Leave the record blank to work out this term alone.

Retaking a course? Mark it as a retake. FSU keeps both grades in your GPA (forgiveness ended in Fall 2004), so the earlier grade stays in your record so far and this one counts too.

  • GPA hours: 13 this term, 58 in total
  • Not in the GPA: Elective (S/U)

Dean’s List: this term qualifies, with a 3.519 GPA on 13 hours. FSU asks for a 3.5 term GPA on at least 12 letter-graded (A to F) hours, in every college.

President’s List: not this term. It has a 3.519 GPA (under 4.00). FSU asks for a 4.0 term GPA on at least 12 letter-graded (A to F) hours, in every college.

Latin honors: 3.209 is under the 3.50 line for cum laude. FSU counts every attempt here. Both GPAs must reach the line. The ceremony uses your grades through the term before; the final honor posts with your last grades.

Plan ahead: to reach a 3.30 FSU GPA, you need at least a 3.65 next term on 15 hours.

FSU GPA rules at a glance

A GPA tool built for the 3.7 and 3.3 steps many colleges use goes wrong for Florida State students in several ways. FSU’s plus and minus grades move in quarter steps, two expired grades count as an F, and every attempt at a course stays in your average. Everything here, the calculator included, follows Florida State’s General Bulletin and its Office of the University Registrar.

RuleWhat FSU does
GradesA, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D- and F. There is no A+ for undergraduates.

How to use the FSU GPA calculator

  1. List this term’s courses. Add the credit hours and pick each grade from A to F, or IE or GE for an Incomplete or a missing grade that has expired. S, U, P, I, W and the other marks sit in that menu too. None of them affects the GPA, and the results list each course that has one.
  2. Flag any retake. Set Retake on a course you’re taking a second time. FSU keeps both grades, so the calculator replaces nothing; it labels the row in the table, which makes the effect on your average easy to spot.
  3. Add your FSU record so far. Open your unofficial transcript in myFSU and find the Cum GPA row at the end. Type its GPA Hrs and either its Points (your total grade points) or its GPA. Points give the exact result.
  4. Add transfer work if you have any. The Transfer Cum row has the hours and GPA for the two transfer fields. The calculator then shows your combined GPA as well.
  5. Pick your standing and set a goal. Choose the standing you start the term in. The target FSU GPA (up to two decimals, such as 3.30) and next term’s hours feed the plan line. Both are optional: if one is blank, the plan line asks for it.

FSU’s Academic Advising office points you to the Cum GPA row when you’re working out probation, and to the Combined Cum row when a program asks for a GPA to get in.

Florida State also runs its own GPA calculator, which Academic Advising links from its Academic Standing & GPA Calculator page. You type each letter grade and your existing credits and quality points, and it shows a term and a cumulative GPA to three decimals. It treats any grade code it doesn’t recognize, such as a W or a P, as a course with hours and no points, so those need its S/U box ticked.

FSU’s tool doesn’t check the Dean’s List, standing or honors. This one does those checks, handles IE and GE, and adds transfer work for a combined GPA.

FSU grading scale: quarter-point plus and minus

Florida State grades on a 4.0 scale where each plus or minus moves a grade by a quarter point. An A- is worth 3.75 and a B+ 3.25, where many schools use 3.7 and 3.3. FSU has used these values since Fall 1984.

GradeMeaningQuality points per hour
AExcellent4.00
A-Excellent3.75
B+Good3.25
BGood3.00
B-Good2.75
C+Average2.25
CAverage2.00
C-Average1.75
D+Poor1.25
DPoor1.00
D-Poor0.75
FFailure0.00

There is no A+ for undergraduates. The A+ worth 4.33 in FSU’s grade table belongs to the College of Law, which also counts an A- as 3.67 and a B+ as 3.33. The College of Medicine uses Honors (4.00), High Pass (3.50) and Pass (3.00). This calculator uses the scale every other FSU student is graded on.

Is a 93 an A at FSU?

It depends on your syllabus. FSU has no university standard for a grading scale. The Faculty Senate’s curriculum guide says so, and it asks every syllabus to spell out what each letter grade takes. The Senate’s own sample scales put the line for an A anywhere from 90% to 95%, so a 93 is an A in some courses and an A- in others.

That’s why this FSU grade calculator asks for letter grades rather than percentages. If you only know your percentage, your syllabus tells you which letter it earns.

How FSU calculates your GPA, with a worked example

FSU divides your total quality points by your GPA hours to get your grade point average. A course’s quality points are its hours times its grade value. GPA hours are the hours of every course with a letter grade from A to F, IE and GE included.

GPA = total quality points ÷ GPA hours

CourseHoursGradeQuality points
English Composition3A-11.25
College Algebra3B+9.75
Biology3C+6.75
Biology lab1A4.00
Psychology3B-8.25
Total1340.00

40.00 ÷ 13 = 3.0769, which FSU’s own calculator shows as 3.077. A tool that cuts instead of rounding would show 3.076, and one that keeps two decimals would show 3.08.

To update your cumulative GPA, add the term to the totals on your transcript. Say your Cum GPA row shows 45 GPA hours and 139.50 points, a 3.100. After this term you’d have 179.50 points over 58 hours, which comes to 3.095.

FSU cumulative, transfer and combined GPA

Your FSU transcript reports three GPAs, and FSU uses each one for something different.

GPAWhat it includesWhat FSU uses it for
FSU cumulative (Cum GPA)Courses taken at FSU onlyAcademic standing, probation and the 2.0 you need to graduate
Transfer CumTransfer and dual-enrollment coursesFeeds the combined GPA
Combined CumFSU and transfer courses togetherAdmission to many majors and programs, and Latin honors (with the FSU GPA)

Grades from another school can’t raise your FSU GPA or make up a quality-point deficit at FSU, even when they lift your combined GPA. The one exception is the dean-approved GatorFlex route for dismissed students, covered under probation below.

Does FSU have grade forgiveness?

No. Florida State’s grade forgiveness policy ended in Fall 2004, so a second attempt adds to your record instead of erasing the first. A D or an F lets you retake the course; the original and the repeat grade then both go into your GPA, while the credit counts once toward graduation.

Say you failed a 3-hour course and retook it for an A. The two attempts add 12.00 quality points over 6 GPA hours, a 2.000 for that course, and you earn 3 hours of credit. If FSU replaced the F, the same course would count as a 4.000.

If you passed with a C- or higher, a second try earns no extra credit unless the course is listed as repeatable. Its grade still goes into your FSU cumulative GPA. FSU’s Office of Admissions counts both grades of a repeat for transfer applicants too.

What GPA do you need for the Dean’s List at FSU?

It takes a 3.5 GPA for the term on at least 12 hours of letter-graded (A to F) courses, the same line in every FSU college. A 4.0 on the same 12 hours puts you on the President’s List.

A 3.4 term doesn’t make the Dean’s List and a 3.7 does, as long as at least 12 of your hours are letter-graded. S/U and other courses without a letter grade don’t count toward those 12. The calculator checks both lists from this term’s courses, and a 4.0 term shows as meeting both lines.

What GPA puts you on academic probation at FSU?

Probation starts when your FSU cumulative GPA falls below 2.0. Transfer grades play no part, because standing uses FSU courses only.

At the end of a termWhat happens
FSU cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higherGood standing
Under 2.0Academic probation for your next term, which must carry 12 to 15 letter-graded hours
On probation, back to 2.0 or higherGood standing again
On probation, still under 2.0, term GPA of 2.5 or higherAcademic Probation Continued, for two terms in a row at most
On probation, still under 2.0, term GPA under 2.5Dismissal
Still under 2.0 after two terms of Probation ContinuedDismissal

FSU has no separate academic warning step for undergraduates. You’re in good standing, on probation, on probation continued, dismissed, or reinstated on probation after a dismissal.

Students in their first term at FSU are guaranteed a second term, though they can still be placed on probation. A first-semester GPA under 2.0 also means a required one-credit course the next term: SLS 1122, Strategies for Academic Success, or SLS 3140 for transfer students.

A dismissed student can come back only if their academic dean reinstates them. One way back is online coursework through the University of Florida’s GatorFlex program, which replaced UF’s Flexible Learning program in Fall 2026.

Your dean has to approve the courses first. Their grades go into your FSU GPA, but the hours don’t count toward your degree, and a course you’ve already passed anywhere with a D- or better doesn’t qualify.

Another route is an Associate in Arts degree from a Florida public college or university with at least a 2.0 overall. With the dean’s approval, that resets your FSU GPA to 0.00 when you’re readmitted. You need a 2.0 FSU cumulative GPA to graduate. Graduate students go on probation below a 3.0.

Latin honors at FSU: cum laude, magna and summa

FSU awards degrees of distinction to undergraduates on two GPAs at once. The FSU cumulative and the combined GPA must each reach the band, so the lower of the two sets your honor.

DistinctionFSU and combined GPA
Cum laude3.500 to 3.699
Magna cum laude3.700 to 3.899
Summa cum laude3.900 or higher

You also need 40 or more semester hours of letter-graded FSU work, your final term’s courses among them. The combined GPA takes in all your attempted college work, dual enrollment included. The honor announced at commencement uses your grades through the previous term, and the final one is set once your last grades post.

Say your FSU GPA is 3.958 and your combined GPA is 3.869. The lower figure sits in the magna cum laude band, so that’s your honor, even though your FSU GPA alone would reach summa.

What GPA does FSU require?

Different FSU rules ask for different GPAs, and only some of them are the GPA this calculator works out.

PurposeGPAWhich GPA
First-year admission4.3 to 4.6 (middle 50% of admitted students, Fall 2026)FSU’s recalculated high school core GPA
Transfer admissionAt least 3.0All college courses you’ve attempted, and your last school
Good standing and graduation2.0FSU cumulative GPA
S/U option2.5Your GPA (not needed in your first term at FSU)
Dean’s List, President’s List3.5, 4.0Term GPA on 12 or more letter-graded hours
Latin honors3.5, 3.7, 3.9Both the FSU and the combined GPA
Graduate good standing3.0Graduate GPA (courses numbered 5000 and above)

The first-year figure is a high school GPA that FSU’s Office of Admissions recalculates from core courses. FSU doesn’t publish how it weights them, and it tells applicants not to report weighted grades themselves, so no college GPA calculator can produce that number. The same admitted middle 50% had ACT scores of 31 to 34 and SAT scores of 1380 to 1480.

How FSU counts a transfer applicant’s GPA

For transfer admission, FSU uses every college course you’ve attempted, at every school you’ve attended. D, F and WF grades all count, and when you’ve repeated a course, both grades go into the calculation.

Applicants with 60 or more transferable hours, or an AA degree, should have at least a 3.0 on all attempted college work and a 3.0 at the last school attended. Applicants with 12 to 59 hours need the same 3.0s. FSU also weighs their high school record and test scores, and it says applicants whose academic GPA is under 3.5 are rarely admissible.

To estimate that transfer GPA with the calculator, give each attempt its own row, count a WF as an F, and leave the record fields blank.

How to raise your FSU GPA

The plan line under the calculator gives the GPA you’d need next term to reach a target. It uses your current FSU record, or this term alone, as the starting point, plus the hours you plan to take.

Say you’re on probation with a 1.850 FSU GPA over 30 GPA hours, which is 55.50 quality points. To get back to a 2.00 after a 15-hour term, you need 90.00 points over 45 hours. The term has to bring 34.50 of them, a 2.300 GPA, which the plan line shows as 2.30. If one term can’t close the gap, a term GPA of 2.5 or higher still keeps you enrolled on Probation Continued, for up to two terms.

Hours matter as much as grades. The more GPA hours you already have, the more a single term has to carry to move your average. Retakes help less than you might hope at FSU, because the new grade is added and the old one stays.

Major GPA, S/U courses and other FSU GPAs

Many FSU majors and programs set their own GPA requirements, and Academic Advising notes that the combined GPA is the one commonly used for admission to academic programs. For a GPA on your major courses alone, enter just those courses with the record fields empty, then read the term GPA.

Graduate admission looks at yet another slice: all the work you attempted as an upper-division (junior or senior) undergraduate. FSU’s minimum there is a 3.0, and you can estimate it the same way, with only those courses entered.

The S/U option lets you take one elective a term, plus a physical education activity course, as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory, up to 18 hours in all. The elective has to sit outside your major, minor and CoreFSU requirements.

You need a 2.5 GPA for the S/U option, except in your first term at FSU, and the switch has to be made by the end of the seventh week. College of Business courses aren’t offered this way. An S counts toward the hours you need to graduate but not toward your GPA.

Graduate students use the same grade values, but S and U grades don’t count, and probation starts below a 3.0. The College of Law and the College of Medicine use their own scales, which this calculator doesn’t apply.

How this FSU GPA calculator works

This Florida State GPA calculator is built on the grade values and rules FSU publishes. The grade scale, the IE and GE rule, the repeat rule and the Dean’s and President’s Lists come from the 2026–2027 General Bulletin, and standing from the Bulletin’s academic standing and retention rules. Latin honors follow the Registrar’s Degrees of Distinction page.

The calculator counts every attempt, shows GPAs to three decimals rounded the way FSU’s own calculator rounds, and adds your transfer work for a combined GPA.

It has limits too. It works only from the record you type in, since it can’t read your transcript, and it can’t tell which courses count toward your major. It doesn’t apply the Law or Medicine scales either, and it can’t produce FSU’s recalculated admissions GPA.

Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is stored. Calculate Your Grade isn’t connected with Florida State University. If a result here ever disagrees with your transcript, the transcript is right, and your academic dean or the Registrar can explain the difference.

  • Comparing FSU with UF? The grade calculator UF students use runs on UF’s scale, where plus and minus grades move in thirds of a point: an A- is 3.67 and a B+ 3.33. Like FSU, UF counts both grades of a retake, but it cuts every GPA at two decimals, while FSU’s own calculator rounds to three.
  • Also considering UGA? The UGA grade calculator follows the University of Georgia’s rules and estimates your HOPE GPA as well. UGA has no D+ or D-, its A- and B+ are worth 3.7 and 3.3, and it cuts every GPA at two decimals.

Frequently asked questions

Is a B+ a 3.3 at FSU?

No. At FSU a B+ is worth 3.25 and an A- 3.75, because plus and minus grades move the value by a quarter point rather than a third. A B+ is worth 3.33 only in the College of Law.

Is a 3.7 GPA good at FSU?

For a term, yes. On FSU’s scale a 3.7 sits between a B+ (3.25) and an A- (3.75), much closer to the A-. On at least 12 letter-graded hours it makes the Dean’s List, and a 3.7 in both your FSU and combined GPAs reaches magna cum laude. For first-year admission, FSU uses its recalculated high school core GPA instead.

Is there an A+ at FSU?

Not for undergraduates. The highest grade is an A, worth 4.00. The A+ worth 4.33 in FSU’s grade table is for College of Law courses only.

Is a D passing at FSU?

A D earns the course’s credit and 1.00 quality point per hour, so it passes for credit. It doesn’t meet a requirement that calls for a C- or better, though.

CoreFSU asks for a C- in many of the courses you use for it, including Quantitative and Logical Thinking, English Composition, the state-mandated writing courses, Ethics, Oral Communication and the natural sciences lab. You may repeat a course after a D, and both grades count.

What happens if you fail a class at FSU?

An F adds the course’s hours to your GPA with 0.00 quality points, so it pulls your average down. You can retake the course, but FSU keeps both grades in your GPA. If your FSU cumulative GPA drops below 2.0, you go on academic probation for the next term.

Do S/U (pass/fail) courses count in your FSU GPA?

No. Neither an S nor a U earns quality points, so your GPA leaves them out. An S still earns the course’s hours toward graduation.

Does an Incomplete hurt your FSU GPA?

Not while it’s an I. If you don’t finish the work in time, it turns into the default grade your instructor set or, if there isn’t one, into an IE at the end of your next term of enrollment. An IE counts as an F.

Do transfer, AP or dual-enrollment credits count in your FSU GPA?

Not in your FSU cumulative GPA, which covers FSU courses only. Transfer and dual-enrollment grades go into your transfer and combined GPAs. AP, IB and other exam credit appear as EC and carry no grade at all.

Does FSU round GPAs?

FSU’s own GPA calculator shows three decimals, rounded, such as 3.077, and the Registrar writes its honors bands to three decimals: 3.500, 3.700 and 3.900. This calculator rounds the same way.

Is a 70% a 2.0 GPA at FSU?

Only if your syllabus makes a 70% a C, which is worth 2.00. FSU has no university-wide percentage scale, and in most of the Faculty Senate’s sample scales a 70 is a C-, worth 1.75.

What’s the lowest GPA FSU will accept?

FSU doesn’t publish a cutoff for first-year applicants. It reviews them holistically and publishes the middle 50% of admitted students instead: a 4.3 to 4.6 recalculated core GPA for Fall 2026.

Florida’s Board of Governors sets the minimum requirements for all state universities, and admitted FSU students usually exceed them. Transfer applicants should have at least a 3.0 on all attempted college work.

Is this the official FSU GPA calculator?

It isn’t: Calculate Your Grade has no connection to Florida State University. FSU runs its own GPA calculator, which Academic Advising links from its Academic Standing & GPA Calculator page, and your transcript holds your official GPA.
