UH GPA Calculator

This UH GPA calculator works out your University of Houston GPA the way UH does. There’s no A+, every retake counts unless the First-year Grade Exclusion applies, and GPAs are cut, not rounded, at two decimals. Need a semester and cumulative GPA calculator for another school? Ours takes any scale.

UH GPA Calculator

Pick your college, then enter this semester’s courses with their hours and grades. Add your UH record so far to see your cumulative GPA, your standing, the Dean’s List and whether a retake can be excluded.

myUH shows your cumulative GPA and the GPA hours behind it; total grade points give the exact result. Count only UH courses with a letter grade: transfer, AP and test credit never enter your UH GPA. Leave the record blank to work out this semester alone.

Retaking a course? At UH both grades normally stay in your GPA, so pick Both count. Pick an Exclude option only for the First-year Grade Exclusion: a D+ or lower from your first 12 months at UH (you started in Fall 2018 or later), retaken at UH within 12 months. You can exclude three courses at most, and only one of them at the 3000 level, which takes a (3000) option. None at 4000 or above qualifies, and you have to apply. Add your record so far so the earlier grade can come out of it.

A 2.95 GPA is at or above 2.00, the line for good academic standing at UH.

  • Grade points: 41.67 this term, 174.42 in total
  • GPA hours: 14 this term, 59 in total

Dean’s List: not this semester. It has a 2.97 GPA (under 3.50). CLASS asks for a semester GPA of 3.50 or better on 12 or more completed hours, at least 9 of them letter-graded, with no I (except in a senior honors thesis course), no D of any kind (D+, D or D-), no F and no U that semester.

Latin honors: your window has 14 GPA hours (this semester alone); UH needs at least 54 hours at UH and uses your last 54. Add the earlier hours in that window and their GPA: cum laude from 3.50, magna cum laude from 3.70 and summa cum laude from 3.90.

Plan ahead: to reach a 3.00 cumulative GPA, you need at least a 3.18 next term on 15 hours.

UH GPA rules at a glance

  • The University of Houston grades on a standard 4.0 scale that has plus and minus steps but no A+. An A is worth 4.00 grade points and an F 0.00. In between come A- 3.67, B+ 3.33, B 3.00, B- 2.67, C+ 2.33, C 2.00, C- 1.67, D+ 1.33, D 1.00 and D- 0.67.
  • To get your GPA, UH divides your grade points by the hours you took for a letter grade. Marks of S, U, W, I, IP and NR carry no grade points and stay out of it.
  • UH truncates every GPA at two decimals rather than rounding, so a 3.4975 is a 3.49, not a 3.50.
  • A retaken course doesn’t replace the old grade at UH. Both attempts stay in your cumulative GPA.
  • The one exception is the First-year Grade Exclusion: a D+ or lower from your first 12 months at UH, retaken at UH within 12 months, can leave your GPA. It covers three courses at most, and you have to apply for it.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.00 is the line for good academic standing and the minimum to graduate.
  • The Dean’s List takes a 3.50 semester GPA on 9 or more hours, or 12 or more in five colleges: Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Engineering, Business, and Architecture and Design.
  • Latin honors come from the GPA on your last 54 hours at UH, not your cumulative GPA: cum laude from 3.50, magna cum laude from 3.70 and summa cum laude from 3.90.

How to use the UH GPA calculator

Think of it as a UH grade calculator for the whole semester: you enter every course at once, and it turns them into your GPA, your standing and your honors checks.

  1. Pick your college. It sets the Dean’s List line the calculator checks: 9 hours in most colleges, 12 in five of them, and a letter-grade rule in CLASS.
  2. Add your UH record so far. Enter your current UH GPA with the GPA hours behind it. Total grade points, if you have them, give an exact result. Then set your standing now: Good, On warning, First term or On probation. Leave the record blank to work out this semester alone.
  3. Enter this semester’s courses. Give each course its hours and the grade you got or expect to get. A course graded S/U goes in as S or U, and it won’t move your GPA.
  4. Mark any retakes. For an ordinary UH retake, pick Both count. Pick an Exclude option only if the course qualifies for the First-year Grade Exclusion, and use a (3000) option for a 3000-level course.
  5. Read the results. You get this semester’s GPA and your cumulative GPA, both cut to two decimals, with your academic standing and the Dean’s List and Latin honors checks. Fill in a target GPA and your hours next term, and it works out the term average that gets your cumulative GPA there.

A worked example

When the page loads, the calculator already holds a sample semester for a student in Liberal Arts and Social Sciences with a 2.95 UH GPA on 45 GPA hours:

CourseHoursGradeGrade points
First-Year Writing3B+ (3.33)9.99
Calculus I4C (2.00)8.00
U.S. History3A- (3.67)11.01
U.S. and Texas Government3B (3.00)9.00
Chemistry Lab1A- (3.67)3.67
This semester1441.67

The semester GPA is 41.67 ÷ 14 = 2.9764, which UH cuts to 2.97. Rounding would have given 2.98. The record so far holds 2.95 × 45 = 132.75 grade points, so the cumulative GPA is (132.75 + 41.67) ÷ (45 + 14) = 174.42 ÷ 59 = 2.9562, cut to 2.95.

Now suppose Calculus I is a retake of an F from your first semester. As an ordinary retake, both grades count and nothing above changes: the F is already in the 132.75 points and 45 hours. If the course qualifies for the First-year Grade Exclusion, the F and its 4 hours leave the record, and the cumulative GPA becomes 174.42 ÷ (59 − 4) = 174.42 ÷ 55 = 3.1712, which is a 3.17. One exclusion moves this student from 2.95 to 3.17.

Where to find your GPA hours and grade points in myUH

Sign in to myUH and open the Student Center. Your Academic Record shows your cumulative UH GPA for your last semester of attendance, and your transcript lists every course with its hours and grade. Count the hours of your UH courses with a letter grade, A through F: those are your GPA hours.

If your record shows your total grade points, enter those instead of the GPA for an exact result. Course History can sort your courses by grade, which makes it quick to count the hours you earned with each letter. Leave out transfer and test credit, since they never enter the UH GPA.

University of Houston grading scale

The UH grading scale comes from the 2026–2027 Undergraduate Catalog, which gives every letter a fixed grade-point value per semester hour. With no A+ on the scale, a UH GPA tops out at 4.00.

GradeGrade points per hourWhat the catalog calls it
A4.00Outstanding achievement
A-3.67
B+3.33
B3.00Commendable; exceeding all requirements
B-2.67
C+2.33
C2.00Proficient; satisfactorily meeting requirements
C-1.67
D+1.33
D1.00Poor; may not meet some college requirements
D-0.67
F0.00Failing

A through D- and S earn credit; an F earns none. Some programs need a higher grade for a course to count toward the major or as a prerequisite, so a passing D can still leave you short in your degree plan.

Percentages and letter grades at UH

The catalog doesn’t tie any letter to a percentage. Your instructor’s syllabus sets the cut-offs, so an 80% can be a B- in one course and a B in another. Check the syllabus to turn your percentage into a letter, then use that letter’s grade points here. If your syllabus uses a common scale, a percent to grade calculator shows the letter each score lands on.

How UH calculates your GPA

GPA stands for grade point average. To calculate GPA at UH by hand, use only your UH courses and take these four steps:

  1. Grade points for each course. Multiply the course’s semester credit hours by its grade’s points. A B+ in a 3-hour course is 3 × 3.33 = 9.99 grade points.
  2. Add them up. Total the grade points for every course with a letter grade, F included.
  3. Divide by the letter-graded hours. Divide the total by the hours of those courses. S, U, W, I, IP and NR hours aren’t in either number.
  4. Cut after the second decimal. The catalog’s rule is to truncate any digits past the second decimal, never to round them.

UH truncates: why a 3.4975 is a 3.49

Truncating means dropping every digit after the second decimal, however large. Take a 12-hour semester with an A and three B+ grades, all 3-hour courses. That’s 12.00 + 9.99 + 9.99 + 9.99 = 41.97 grade points, and 41.97 ÷ 12 = 3.4975. Rounded, that would be a 3.50 and a place on the Dean’s List. At UH it’s a 3.49, one hundredth short. The same cut applies at 2.00: a 1.9999 cumulative GPA is a 1.99, which is under the line for good standing.

The calculator shows the GPA the way UH does, and when the cut drops digits it prints the longer figure underneath, such as “2.9764 cut to 2.97”, so you can see how close you are.

Semester, cumulative and major GPA

A semester GPA covers a single term and decides the Dean’s List and, in some cases, your standing. Your cumulative GPA, also called your overall GPA, covers every letter-graded course you’ve taken at UH, retakes included. It decides good standing, graduation and most GPA requirements.

Some degree plans also look at the grades in your major courses. Your college’s section of the catalog and your degree plan list any such requirement, and the calculator can work one out if you enter only those courses.

Transfer, AP and credit by exam don’t enter your UH GPA

Your UH GPA is built only from courses you took at UH. Transfer credits from another institution, AP credit and credit by exam can count toward your degree, but their grades never join the UH GPA. Taking a course somewhere else won’t raise or lower it either, and that includes retaking a UH course at another school.

Retaking a course at UH: every attempt counts

A new grade doesn’t replace the old one at UH. Other schools offer that as grade replacement or grade forgiveness; for an ordinary retake, UH averages every attempt. The catalog treats a repeated course, including one repeated in a summer session, as a new course when it works out your cumulative GPA.

The old and the new grade stay in, each with its hours. Retaking a D can still raise your GPA, since the new grade adds its points to the average, but the D stays in the total.

The First-year Grade Exclusion: who qualifies

It’s the only way to take an earlier grade out of your UH GPA. You qualify for a course when every one of these is true:

  • You started at UH in Fall 2018 or later. Earlier students don’t qualify, even after a long break and readmission.
  • You earned a D+ or lower in the course within your first 12 months at UH.
  • The course is at the 1000, 2000 or 3000 level. Only one of your exclusions can be a 3000-level course, and no 4000- or 5000-level course qualifies.
  • You retake the same course at UH within 12 months of the original grade.
  • The original grade didn’t come from an academic honesty violation.

You can exclude three courses in total, once per course. The excluded grade stays on your transcript with a note, but it leaves your cumulative GPA, and only the retake counts.

The 12-month windows

In practice, 12 months means three terms, counting summer. The Office of the Provost gives these deadlines for enrolling in the retake:

First attempt (in your first year at UH)Retake must be by
Fall 2024Fall 2025
Spring 2025Spring 2026
Summer 2025Summer 2026
Fall 2025Fall 2026
Spring 2026Spring 2027
Summer 2026Summer 2027

How to apply, and the deadline

The exclusion isn’t automatic. After the retake has a grade on your record, you submit a Grade Exclusion request through the Office of the Provost and name the course. You have to send it before you apply to graduate.

Retaking a course or withdrawing from the retake doesn’t commit you to using one of your three exclusions, so you can decide once you see the new grade. If you retook a course during the interim grading policy of Spring 2020 to Spring 2021 and chose an S, that converted S still works as the retake.

What an exclusion doesn’t change

An exclusion changes your cumulative GPA from then on. It doesn’t undo academic or financial aid actions or decisions already made on the original grade or that semester’s GPA, such as a probation notice.

Your transcript still shows the original course and grade, and graduate and professional schools, medical and law schools among them, may still count it when they work out their own GPA. Talk with your academic advisor, and your financial aid advisor if you receive aid, before you retake a course for this.

Academic warning, probation and suspension at UH

Everything here turns on a 2.00 GPA, checked at the end of each term. What happens below it depends on where you start the term:

Where you startWhat happens
Your first fall or spring at UHA GPA under 2.00 puts you on academic warning.
Good standing, or your second term after a warningA cumulative GPA under 2.00 puts you on academic probation.
On academic probationA term GPA under 2.00 means academic suspension. A term GPA of 2.00 or more with a cumulative still under 2.00 keeps you on probation.

A first suspension is for at least one fall or spring term and a second for at least 12 months; a third ends your time at UH. Coming back takes a new application and an appeal to the dean of the college you hope to join, and readmission isn’t guaranteed.

Getting off probation

You come off probation when one term’s GPA is 2.00 or more and your cumulative GPA is back at 2.00 or more. A good term on its own isn’t enough while the cumulative is still under 2.00, though it does keep you from suspension.

The calculator shows how far you are from the line in grade points. At 1.90 on 30 GPA hours you hold 57 grade points, 3 short of the 60 a 2.00 needs. A 15-hour term only has to beat a C average by those 3 points: 33 grade points, a 2.20 term GPA, brings you to exactly 2.00.

College rules can be stricter

Colleges can add standing rules of their own for their majors, and each college’s dean makes the final call. The Bauer College of Business, for example, places pre-business majors with a UH GPA from 2.00 to 2.49 on College Academic Notice, and anyone under 2.50 has to be advised every semester until they file a degree plan. Pick Business in the calculator and it adds that check.

Dean’s List at UH, college by college

The Dean’s List needs a semester GPA of 3.50 or better, worked out the usual UH way and cut to two decimals. The S grade doesn’t count in that GPA. The number of hours you need depends on your college:

CollegeHours you needNotes
Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS)12At least 9 of the 12 must be letter-graded.
Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM)12You must be an NSM major at the start of the term.
Engineering12
Business (Bauer)12
Architecture and Design12
Every other college9Some colleges add their own conditions.

An I that semester rules you out unless it’s for a senior honors thesis, and so does any D, F or U. The catalog says “D”, so the calculator treats a D+ and a D- the same way as a D. A W doesn’t rule you out. Outside CLASS, the catalog says the S grade isn’t counted, so the calculator counts only letter-graded hours toward the 9 or 12. CLASS and NSM publish their lists for fall and spring semesters.

Graduating with honors at UH: the last 54 hours

Latin honors at UH don’t use your cumulative GPA. They use the GPA on your last 54 letter-graded hours at UH, and you need at least 54 UH hours to qualify:

Honors GPA (last 54 UH hours)Latin honor
3.90 or higherSumma cum laude (highest honors)
3.70–3.89Magna cum laude (high honors)
3.50–3.69Cum laude (honors)

How the 54-hour window works

Count back 54 hours from the end of your degree. The term in which you reach the 54th hour counts in full, so the window is often a little longer than 54 hours. S grades earn hours but stay out of both the GPA and the count, and U, I and W hours stay out too.

Say your last three terms had 15 letter-graded hours each, and the term before them had 12. That’s 45 hours in the last three, so the window reaches back into the 12-hour term, and all 12 of its hours count: 57 hours in total. If those 57 hours hold 210.88 grade points, the honors GPA is 210.88 ÷ 57 = 3.6996, which UH cuts to 3.69. That’s cum laude, one hundredth short of magna cum laude.

A strong cumulative GPA doesn’t help here if the final terms are weaker, and a rough first year doesn’t hurt if the final 54 hours are strong.

To check yours, enter the earlier terms inside your window under “Earlier hours in your last 54” and “GPA on those hours”, and this semester’s courses in the rows. The calculator treats this semester as your last.

The Honors College, University Honors and Honors in Major

These are separate from Latin honors. Students who complete the Honors College’s requirements, including a senior honors thesis or project, graduate with “University Honors with Honors in Major”, or “University Honors” without the thesis. Students outside the Honors College who complete a senior honors thesis or project graduate with “Honors in Major”.

Staying in the Honors College has its own GPA line. The catalog expects honors students to take at least one honors course each term and to keep a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Getting in has no minimum GPA, though the catalog notes that most continuing and transfer students it admits have at least a 3.50 in their earlier college work.

The six-W limit and your GPA

A withdrawal leaves the course out of your GPA, but it isn’t free. Under a Texas rule in place since Fall 2007, you get six Ws for your whole college career, whether you drop a course yourself or an instructor drops you. Once you’ve used all six, you have to finish every later course you enroll in, and a course you can’t drop counts with whatever grade you earn, F included.

Before you drop, students on financial aid should talk with a financial aid advisor, international students on F-1 or J-1 visas with International Student and Scholar Services, and athletes with Student-Athlete Services.

GPA for financial aid at UH

Financial aid has its own Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) rules, with three parts:

  • a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for undergraduates, unless your program’s catalog sets a different one;
  • at least 67% of the hours you attempt at UH completed and passed;
  • finishing within 150% of your program’s length, so 180 attempted hours for a 120-hour degree.

Repeated courses with an F, W, I or IP count as attempted hours, and so do transfer hours used toward your UH degree. A W keeps your GPA safe but still lowers your completion rate. The cumulative GPA from the calculator answers the first part; the completion rate and the time limit need your attempted hours, which myUH shows.

Admission GPAs at UH (not your UH GPA)

UH works out a separate GPA for transfer and freshman admission, and Bauer adds its own line for students who want to switch into business.

Transfer admission

If you’re applying to UH as a transfer student, the Office of Admissions works out a separate GPA from every transferable college-level course at every school you’ve attended. It counts every attempt of a repeated course, even one your old school excluded, leaves out developmental courses, and leaves out S and P grades while counting F grades.

With 15 or more hours of college-level credit, a GPA of 2.50 or higher meets the assured admission line, and 2.25 to 2.49 goes to individual review. With fewer than 15 hours, you apply under the freshman requirements. This admission GPA never becomes your UH GPA: once you enroll, your UH GPA starts from your UH courses only.

Freshman admission

For freshmen, UH works out its own GPA, an unweighted average on a 4.0 scale from the English, math, science and social studies grades on your high school transcript. Extracurricular classes are left out.

A 3.5 or higher on that GPA is one of three ways to assured admission. The other two are a top 10% class rank and a score of 1250 or higher on the SAT or 26 or higher on the ACT. Meet any one of them and you’re admitted automatically. Meet none and UH reviews your application individually, using the essay and resume every applicant submits. Some majors set requirements above these.

To estimate your core GPA before you apply, enter only those four subjects, unweighted, in the GPA grade calculator high school students use.

Changing your major to pre-business at Bauer

Moving into the Bauer College of Business takes two GPAs. One is your UH GPA, the number this calculator works out. It has to be at least 2.5, and you must be in good standing. The other is a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher that includes any transfer work you’ve attempted.

You also need 30 or more college hours with grades, not counting AP or IB credit, and a C or better (or credit by exam) in College Algebra or a higher math course. Students who fall short can still be approved by individual review.

Timing matters. If you haven’t met the requirements by the end of the term in which you complete 45 hours, you can’t change to pre-business. Newly admitted students can’t change their major until they have a UH GPA. Transfer applicants with 30 or more hours need the same 3.25; past 60 hours, it’s figured on the last 60. Transfers admitted to UH with 45 or more hours can’t switch to pre-business after they enroll.

What generic GPA calculators get wrong at UH

Most free GPA calculators follow generic rules, and UH’s rules differ in six places that can change your number:

How this calculator works

This University of Houston GPA calculator follows UH’s 2026–2027 Undergraduate Catalog. The grade points, the marks that stay out of the GPA, the retake rules and the First-year Grade Exclusion, academic standing, the Dean’s List and graduation honors all come from it. Each GPA calculation uses your exact grade points and hours, and the cut to two decimals comes last, the way UH does it.

It can’t check the parts of the exclusion that depend on dates, such as your start term and the 12-month windows, so it tells you what to confirm. It uses the university-wide standing rules plus Bauer’s notice line; other colleges’ extra rules and your major requirements aren’t built in. Your official GPA is always the one myUH shows.

The catalog doesn’t say how a repeated course inside your last 54 hours is treated for Latin honors. The calculator uses the hours and GPA you enter, so if a repeat falls in your window, check with your college. The catalog lists its Academic Fresh Start policy as pending final approval, so the calculator leaves it out. It’s built for undergraduates: graduate, law and optometry grades follow their own catalogs.

Everything runs in your browser; the page stores nothing you enter. Calculate Your Grade isn’t connected with the University of Houston in any way, so myUH, your college and your advisor have the final word.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my UH GPA?

Give every course its grade points times its semester hours, total them, and divide by the hours of your letter-graded courses. Then cut the answer after the second decimal. A B+ (3.33) and a B (3.00) in two 3-hour courses give 9.99 + 9.00 = 18.99 grade points on 6 hours, and 18.99 ÷ 6 = 3.165, which UH reports as 3.16.

Does UH use a 4.0 scale, and is there an A+?

Yes, UH grades on 4.0 points with plus and minus steps, but it has no A+. An A is the top grade at 4.00, followed by A- at 3.67 and B+ at 3.33, down to D- at 0.67 and F at 0.00. A UH GPA can’t go above 4.00.

Does UH round or truncate GPAs?

UH truncates. Its catalog drops every digit past the second decimal instead of rounding, so a 3.4975 is a 3.49 and a 1.999 is a 1.99. That can put you one hundredth under the Dean’s List or the 2.00 line.

If I retake a class at UH, does the new grade replace the old one?

No. UH counts a repeated course as a new course, so the old grade and the new one both count in your cumulative GPA. The one way around that is the First-year Grade Exclusion, which can take out a D+ or lower from your first 12 months at UH when you retake the course at UH within 12 months and apply.

Who qualifies for the First-year Grade Exclusion?

Students who started at UH in Fall 2018 or later, for a D+ or lower earned in their first 12 months at UH. The course has to be at the 3000 level or below, and you have to retake it at UH within 12 months. You can exclude three courses at most, only one of them at the 3000 level, and not a grade from an academic honesty violation.

Is grade exclusion automatic?

No. You apply through the Office of the Provost after the retake has a grade, and you have to apply before you apply to graduate. Until you apply, both grades stay in your GPA.

Can I retake the course at another college for grade exclusion?

No. Both the original course and the retake have to be UH courses. A course you take somewhere else can transfer for credit, but it doesn’t change your UH GPA at all.

What semester GPA earns the Dean’s List at UH?

You need a semester GPA of 3.50 or better on 9 or more hours (12 in Architecture and Design, Business, Engineering, CLASS and NSM). An I rules you out unless it’s in a senior honors thesis course, and so does any D, F or U that semester; CLASS also needs at least 9 of the 12 hours letter-graded.

Does an incomplete (I) hurt my UH GPA?

Not while it’s an I, because it carries no grade points. If you don’t finish the work within a year, it becomes an F and counts. When UH checks the GPA requirements for your degree, it treats any I as an F.

Do W grades affect my GPA at UH?

No, a W carries no grade points. But each W uses one of the six you get for your whole time in college, and for financial aid it still counts as hours attempted and not completed.

What GPA puts me on academic probation at UH?

Falling under a 2.00 cumulative GPA. In your first fall or spring at UH, a GPA under 2.00 gives you an academic warning instead, and probation follows if your cumulative GPA is still under 2.00 after the next term.

How do I get off academic probation at UH?

Earn a term GPA of 2.00 or more while bringing your cumulative GPA back to 2.00 or more. A good term with a cumulative still under 2.00 keeps you on probation but protects you from suspension; a term under 2.00 while on probation means suspension.

Do transfer grades count in my UH GPA?

They count toward your degree, not your GPA. Only courses taken at UH go into your UH GPA. Admissions does use your grades from every school for its own transfer admission GPA, which is a separate number.

Can I get into UH with a 2.5 GPA?

As a transfer student with 15 or more college hours, yes: a 2.50 transfer GPA meets UH’s assured admission line. As a freshman, a 2.5 is below the 3.5 core GPA pathway, so assured admission would have to come from a top 10% class rank or a 1250 SAT or 26 ACT. Otherwise UH reviews your application individually. Some majors ask for more than the university minimum.

What GPA do you need to change your major to business at UH?

A cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher, including any transfer work you’ve attempted, and a UH GPA of at least 2.5 with good standing. You also need 30 or more graded college hours (AP and IB credit don’t count) and at least a C in College Algebra or a higher math course. All of it has to be in place by the end of the term in which you reach 45 hours.
