Where these numbers come from

The composite is exact. College Board publishes what each section of each exam is worth, and this calculator uses those published weights without alteration.

The 1 to 5 is an estimate, and it cannot be anything else. College Board publishes no composite-to-score conversion for any subject. It re-sets those points every year through a standard-setting process tied to the particular group of students who sat that exam, so a fixed table cannot exist. To turn your composite into a score, this tool places it on a normal curve and reads the result against College Board's published 2026 score distribution for your subject. That curve is our assumption, not College Board's. Your real score will not match this exactly.

The distribution is College Board's. Every percentage in the table above is their published 2026 figure.

How the AP Lit exam is scored

AP English Literature and Composition is split into two sections, and each carries a fixed weight that College Board publishes.

SectionWhat you answerTimeWeight
Section I55 multiple-choice questions1 hour45%
Section II3 free-response essays2 hours55%

The multiple choice, or MCQ, comes in five sets of 8 to 13 questions, each built on a passage of prose fiction, drama or poetry. College Board guarantees at least two prose fiction passages and at least two poems. Every question counts the same, and there is no guessing penalty: College Board deducts no points for incorrect answers, so leave nothing blank.

The three essays, the free-response questions or FRQs, are Poetry Analysis, Prose Fiction Analysis and Literary Argument. Each FRQ is scored out of 6, and they are weighted equally, so each essay is worth a little over 18% of the exam. The whole thing is fully digital in Bluebook, essays included.

The AP Lit grade calculator’s arithmetic is short. It takes your raw scores, and your composite is your correct answers divided by 55, times 45, plus each essay score divided by 6, times 18.33. One correct answer adds 0.82 points to that composite. One rubric point on an essay adds 3.06, which makes a single essay point worth almost four multiple-choice questions. A whole essay is worth about 22 of them.

What percent is a 5 on AP Lit?

On this AP Lit score calculator, a 5 starts at a composite of 72%. The other bands start at 58.5% for a 4, 44.6% for a 3 and 34.2% for a 2.

Those are the model’s lines, not a table College Board has published. It publishes none for a live exam. So a 70% is a 4 here, two points short of the 5, and anything that close to a boundary could land on either side of it on the real exam.

The more useful version is the one that starts from your multiple-choice score. Find the row nearest your practice result, and it tells you how many of the 18 essay points you need for each score.

It does not matter which essay the points come from. Take 35 correct and a 4 on each essay: that is 12 of 18 and a composite of 65.3%, a 4. To reach the 5 you need either 9 more right answers or 3 more essay points, one extra point on each essay. For most students the essays are the cheaper route, because 9 more correct answers means cutting your misses by almost half.

AP Lit score distribution 2026, and why pass rates jumped in 2022

College Board publishes the share of students at each score every year. In 2026, 73% of AP Lit students scored 3 or higher and 16% scored a 5.

20214.9%12.0%26.9%37.3%18.8%43.9%

Figures from College Board’s AP Lit score distributions. The 2026 shares are rounded to whole numbers, and College Board has not yet published a student count or mean for 2026. In 2025, 416,531 students took the exam and the mean score was 3.24.

Look at the jump between 2021 and 2022. The share scoring 3 or higher went from 43.9% to 77.9%, and the share of 5s more than tripled. The jump lines up with a change in how scores are set. In spring 2022 College Board changed the way it decides where each score begins, a process it calls evidence-based standard setting. According to a College Board research brief published in April 2025, the new process showed that more AP Lit students were doing college-level work than the older method had suggested. The same brief found that students who used the new scores to skip an introductory college course still did better in the next course than students who took the introductory course.

The pass rate has stayed between 72% and 78% ever since. That is why any AP Lit conversion chart from before 2022 now reads too harsh.

The AP Lit essay rubric: where the 6 points come from

All three essays use one analytic rubric, in effect since fall 2019 and published in full in College Board’s AP Lit scoring rubrics. It has three rows.

RowWhat it rewardsPoints
Row AThesis0 to 1
Row BEvidence and commentary0 to 4
Row CSophistication0 to 1

Row A goes to a thesis that presents a defensible interpretation of the text. Restating the prompt does not earn it. Neither does describing the poem or passage instead of making a claim about it.

Row B is where most of the score lives. At 3 points you give specific evidence for every claim in a line of reasoning and explain how at least one literary element or technique contributes to meaning. The fourth point asks for consistent commentary and for multiple elements or techniques. One rule catches people out. Writing whose grammar or mechanics interfere with communication cannot earn that fourth point.

Row C is a single point, awarded for sophistication of thought or a complex literary argument. The rubric lists four ways to get there: exploring complexities or tensions within the text, placing your interpretation in a broader context, accounting for alternative interpretations, or writing in a style that is consistently vivid and persuasive. It has to run through the argument. A single sentence gesturing at another reading does not count.

Put together, a defensible thesis plus specific evidence and commentary that explains one technique scores 4. Consistent commentary on several techniques makes it a 5, and a 6 needs Row C as well.

What real AP Lit essays score: College Board’s 2025 averages

College Board also publishes how students scored on each essay, which is a useful check on whether your practice scores are realistic. The 2025 exam ran in two sets, and these are its scoring statistics, out of 6.

EssaySet 1 meanSet 2 meanStandard deviation
Poetry Analysis3.463.581.10 to 1.19
Prose Fiction Analysis3.223.381.26 to 1.39
Literary Argument3.503.491.28 to 1.39

The typical essay earned a little under 3.5 points. Prose fiction was the lowest-scoring essay in both sets, so don’t treat it as the easy one.

Feed those averages into the calculator and they tell you what an ordinary essay day demands from the multiple choice. With the Set 1 averages, a 4 needs 34 correct answers. With the slightly higher Set 2 averages, 33 is enough. A 5 on average essays needs 50 of 55. If your practice essays are coming back at 4 or 5 each, you are already above the 2025 average, and your target score depends far more on the essays than on the reading questions.

The three AP Lit essays, with the 2026 prompts

College Board suggests about 40 minutes on each essay. The 2026 prompts are published with their scoring guidelines, and they show what each task looks like.

Question 1: Poetry Analysis. You get a poem and analyze how the poet uses literary elements and techniques to convey something specific. In 2026 it was Christopher Gilbert’s “Marking Time,” and the task was to analyze the speaker’s complex reflections during a morning jog. The common failure is a tour of devices. Imagery, diction, tone and structure earn nothing on their own, and naming an enjambment earns nothing until you say what it does to the poem’s meaning.

Question 2: Prose Fiction Analysis. Same task, with a passage of fiction instead of a poem. The 2026 passage came from Aimee Bender’s novel The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, in which the narrator can sense the feelings of whoever made her food. The rubric’s weakest descriptions are of essays that summarize the passage instead of analyzing it, so resist retelling what happens.

Question 3: Literary Argument. No passage. You choose a work of fiction you know well and argue how a given idea works in it. The 2026 prompt asked how the tension between the old and the new contributes to an interpretation of the work as a whole. The prompt says outright not to merely summarize the plot. Go in with two or three works you could write about from memory.

How to get a 5 on AP Lit

Work backwards from the 72% a 5 needs on this model. With 40 multiple-choice questions right, you need 13 of the 18 essay points, which is a 4, a 4 and a 5. With 45 right, three 4s are enough. So put most of your study time into the essays, where one extra point on each can decide the score.

The step from a 4 to a 5 on an essay is Row B’s fourth point: commentary that stays on your line of reasoning all the way through and explains more than one literary technique. The step to a 6 is the sophistication point. Both are easiest to see in the scored sample essays College Board publishes for recent exams. They sit on the same past exam questions page as the scoring statistics above, next to each year’s prompts, scoring guidelines and Chief Reader Reports. Read an essay that earned a 5 next to one that earned a 4 and the difference is usually plain.

Score your own practice essays the way readers do: one point for a defensible thesis, up to four for evidence and commentary, one for sophistication. If a teacher or classmate scores the same essay, enter the lower of the two numbers. An estimate built on generous essay scores will overstate your result.

Is AP Lit hard?

AP Lit is hard to fail and hard to max out. In 2026, 73% of AP Literature students scored 3 or higher, slightly above the median of 72% across the 40 AP subjects this site covers. Only 16% scored a 5, below the median of 18.5%, and 23 of those 40 subjects gave out a larger share of 5s.

That pattern comes from the rubric. A 3 asks for accurate reading and essays that stay on the question. A 5 needs Row B’s fourth point on most essays and Row C on some, and those reward habits built over a year of close reading. Cramming the week before does little for them.

The multiple choice is the other half of it. The questions ask about the precise effect of a word, a line or a structural choice in a passage you have never seen, with about a minute per question. Timed practice with full passage sets is what moves that number.

AP Lit is literary analysis: it asks what a text means and how its choices create that meaning. AP Lang, AP English Language, asks how a writer persuades. If you take both, the AP Lang calculator works the same way as this one, with AP Lang’s 45 questions and three essays.

Is a 3 on AP Lit good?

College Board labels a 3 qualified, and 73% of 2026 students reached it. A 3 is what most students mean by passing, but whether it earns you college credit depends entirely on the college. Some give credit or placement for a 3, while others want a 4 or a 5. The University of California is a useful example: a 3 or higher on AP Lit meets its systemwide Entry Level Writing Requirement, and its AP credit table lists 8 quarter units for the exam, which is also the most you can get for AP Lit and AP Lang together.

The only reliable answer is the published policy of the college you plan to attend, for your year. College Board’s AP credit policy search is the fastest way to find it.

When is the 2027 AP Lit exam, and when do scores come out?

The 2027 AP English Literature and Composition exam is on Wednesday, May 5, 2027, in Session 1, which College Board describes as typically the morning slot. It is fully digital and lasts 3 hours.

Scores are released in July, and you see yours in your College Board account. College Board announces the exact date in advance, so check there rather than trusting a date from another site.

How this AP Lit grade calculator estimates your score

The composite is exact. College Board publishes the 45% and 55% weights, and scores every essay out of 6. Correct answers over 55, times 45, plus each essay’s score out of 6 times 18.33, is plain arithmetic with no assumptions in it. The tool shows the essays at 18.33%, 18.34% and 18.33% so they add up to 55 exactly. Across all 19,208 whole-point results, that rounding never changes the estimated score.

The 1 to 5 is an estimate. There is no official AP Lit score calculator. College Board does not publish cut scores, and it sets them again each year for the students who sat that exam. This tool places your composite on a normal curve and reads your score off College Board’s 2026 distribution for AP Lit: 16%, 26%, 31%, 16% and 11%. If your composite lands in the top 16% of that curve, your predicted AP score is a 5. The mean and spread of the curve are this site’s assumption, because College Board publishes neither, and that is the one uncertain input here.

If your composite is within a point or two of the next score, the real exam could put you on either side of it.

Why AP Lit score calculators disagree

In September 2026 we checked every other AP English Literature score calculator that shows its cutoffs. They start the 5 anywhere between 75% and 80% of the composite. This one starts it at 72%. Most of that gap comes from out-of-date conversion charts.

The best known is the one in College Board’s 2012 AP Lit practice exam. That exam scored each essay out of 9, added everything into a composite out of 150, and put the 5 at 111, the 4 at 98 and the 3 at 81. As percentages those are 74%, 65% and 54%, close to where some calculators still draw their lines. Two things have changed since. The essays moved to the 6-point analytic rubric in fall 2019, and the 2022 standard-setting change moved where the scores begin. In 2012, 56.6% of students scored 3 or higher. In 2026 it was 73%, so a chart drawn for the 2012 exam sets today’s lines too high.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage is a 5 on AP Lit?

About 72% of the composite on this calculator’s model. College Board does not publish the real cut score and sets it again each year, so treat 72% as an estimate. In 2026, 16% of AP Lit students scored a 5.

Is a 70% a 5 on AP Lit?

No, not on this model. A composite of 70% gives a 4, and a 5 begins at 72%. At 70% you are two points away, so a slightly better essay day could still put you over the line.

How is the AP Lit test graded?

The 55 multiple-choice questions are worth 45% and are scored by counting correct answers. The three essays are worth 55%, each scored out of 6 on College Board’s rubric for thesis, evidence and commentary, and sophistication. The two sections combine into a composite, and College Board converts that to a 1 to 5 using cut points it sets each year.

How long is the AP Lit exam?

3 hours: 1 hour for the 55 multiple-choice questions and 2 hours for the three essays. College Board suggests about 40 minutes per essay.

Is a 3 on AP Lit good?

A 3 means qualified, and 73% of students reached it in 2026. It earns credit or placement at some colleges but not at others, so check the published AP credit policy of the college you plan to attend.

How many multiple-choice questions can I miss and still get a 5?

It depends on your essays. With a 5 on all three, you need 32 correct, so you can miss 23. With a 4 on each, you need 44 correct and can miss 11. The calculator above works this out for any combination.

Is AP Lit curved?

Not in the sense of a fixed share of students getting each score. College Board sets the composite needed for each score after the exam, using a standard-setting process it changed in 2022. The pass rate rose from 43.9% in 2021 to 77.9% in 2022 and was 73% in 2026.

What is the average AP Lit score?

The mean was 3.24 in 2025, from 416,531 students. College Board has not yet published a 2026 mean. On the essays, the 2025 averages ran from 3.22 to 3.58 out of 6.

Can I use this AP Lit grade calculator with an older practice exam?

Yes. Enter your correct answers out of 55. College Board’s 2012 practice exam, for example, also had 55 multiple-choice questions. Exams from before 2020 scored the essays out of 9, so either score your essays again with the current 6-point rubric or change each Rubric points box to 9. Rescoring gives the better estimate, because the old scale and the new rubric reward different things.

When is the AP Lit exam in 2027?

Wednesday, May 5, 2027, in Session 1, typically the morning. It is fully digital in Bluebook and takes 3 hours.
