Where these numbers come from
The composite is exact. College Board publishes what each section of each exam is worth, and this calculator uses those published weights without alteration.
The 1 to 5 is an estimate, and it cannot be anything else. College Board publishes no composite-to-score conversion for any subject. It re-sets those points every year through a standard-setting process tied to the particular group of students who sat that exam, so a fixed table cannot exist. To turn your composite into a score, this tool places it on a normal curve and reads the result against College Board's published 2026 score distribution for your subject. That curve is our assumption, not College Board's. Your real score will not match this exactly.
The distribution is College Board's. Every percentage in the table above is their published 2026 figure.
How the 2027 AP Chem exam is scored
The May 2027 AP Chemistry exam has two sections, and each one is half of your score. Section I is 60 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) in 90 minutes. Section II is seven free-response questions (FRQs) in 105 minutes: three long questions worth 10 points each and four short ones worth 4 points each, 46 points in all.
| Section | What you answer | Time | Weight | Raw points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section I: Multiple Choice | 60 questions, some on their own and some in sets built around a shared stimulus or data set | 1 hour 30 minutes | 50% | 60 |
| Section II: Free Response | 3 long questions (10 points each) and 4 short questions (4 points each) | 1 hour 45 minutes | 50% | 46 |
The whole exam runs 3 hours 15 minutes. It is a hybrid digital exam: you answer the multiple choice and read the free-response questions in the Bluebook app, then write your free-response answers by hand in a paper booklet that is sent off to be scored. Those details come from College Board’s AP Chemistry exam page.
Because the two sections carry the same weight but different raw totals, your composite is (multiple-choice correct ÷ 60) × 50 + (free-response points ÷ 46) × 50. The AP Chemistry grade calculator above does exactly that, one question at a time.
What each free-response question is worth
Spreading half of the exam across 46 points makes every free-response point worth the same, whichever question it comes from. A multiple-choice question is worth less. Each FRQ point is awarded on its own, so a partly right answer still earns partial credit.
| Item | Raw points | Share of your score | Composite points per raw point |
|---|---|---|---|
| One multiple-choice question | 1 | 0.83% | 0.83 |
| One long free-response question | 10 | 10.87% | 1.09 |
| One short free-response question | 4 | 4.35% | 1.09 |
| All 60 multiple-choice questions | 60 | 50% | 0.83 |
| All 7 free-response questions | 46 | 50% | 1.09 |
So one free-response point is worth about 1.3 multiple-choice answers. That ratio, 1.087 ÷ 0.833 = 1.304, is where the “×1.3043” multiplier comes from on AP Chemistry score calculators that use a 120-point scale: 60 + 46 × 1.3043 comes to 120. The weighting is the same as on a 100-point scale. Only the scale changes.
That matters the moment you compare cutoffs from two tools. “A 5 from 72.7” means 72.7% on a 100-point scale, but on a 120-point scale it means about 61%. Convert to a percentage before you believe either one.
What percent is a 5 on AP Chem?
On this calculator’s model, a 5 starts at 72.7% of the composite, a 4 at 56.8%, a 3 at 43% and a 2 at 28.6%. Those are estimates built from College Board’s 2026 score distribution for AP Chemistry. They are not official cutoffs, because College Board does not publish any.
| AP score | Composite needed on this model | Table several AP Chem calculators use |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 72.7% | 72% |
| 4 | 56.8% | 58% |
| 3 | 43% | 42% |
| 2 | 28.6% | 27% |
The two sets land within two points of each other. This one shows where it comes from; none of the AP Chem score calculators using the 72/58/42/27 table can point to a College Board conversion chart for it, because there isn’t one.
Five sets of section totals, run through the AP Chem score calculator above:
| Multiple choice | Free response | Composite | Estimated AP score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 45 of 60 | 33 of 46 | 73.4% | 5 |
| 42 of 60 | 34 of 46 | 72% | 4 |
| 40 of 60 | 30 of 46 | 65.9% | 4 |
| 35 of 60 | 25 of 46 | 56.3% | 3 |
| 30 of 60 | 20 of 46 | 46.7% | 3 |
The second row shows how thin a band edge is. 42 correct answers and 34 free-response points come to 72%, still a 4. One more correct answer, or one more free-response point, makes it a 5.
So is 70% a 5 on AP Chem? Not on this model. It is a 4, roughly three points short of where a 5 starts.
How College Board actually sets the cutoffs
College Board does not use a fixed percentage. It sets the lines for a 2, 3, 4 and 5 each year through what it calls Evidence Based Standard Setting. College faculty judge each question against their own exams. Some also give the AP exam to their students and compare the results with course grades. Psychometricians then use that evidence to set the standards. The process is described on College Board’s score setting page. It is why the same raw score can land in different bands in different years, and why every AP Chem cutoff you find online, including the ones above, is an estimate.
AP Chemistry score distribution 2026
In 2026, 15% of AP Chemistry candidates scored a 5 and 75% scored a 3 or higher, the score usually treated as passing, according to College Board’s 2026 score distributions. Both were down from 2025, when 17.9% scored a 5 and 77.9% scored a 3 or higher.
| AP score | 2026 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 15% | 17.9% |
| 4 | 31% | 28.6% |
| 3 | 30% | 31.4% |
| 2 | 18% | 15.9% |
| 1 | 6% | 6.2% |
| 3 or higher | 75% | 77.9% |
College Board rounds the 2026 shares to whole numbers, so 15, 31 and 30 add up to 76, one more than the 75% it publishes for a 3 or higher.
How rare is a 5 on AP Chem? About one candidate in seven earned one in 2026. The 4 was the most common score, just ahead of the 3.
Is AP Chem hard?
The 2026 numbers say AP Chemistry is easier to pass than its reputation, and harder to top. 75% of candidates scored a 3 or higher, above the middle of the 40 AP exams, where the median was 72%. But only 15% scored a 5, against a median of 18.5%, and just 7 of the 40 exams gave out a smaller share of fives.
Among the sciences, only Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism matched Chemistry’s 75% pass rate, while all four AP Physics exams gave out more fives, between 19% and 24%. AP Biology matched Chemistry’s 15% share of fives but passed fewer students, 71%.
Much of the difficulty is arithmetic. College Board’s course and exam description puts Mathematical Routines, one of the six science practices the exam tests, at 35% to 42% of the multiple choice and 43% to 53% of the free response. Nobody is assigned AP Chemistry at random, though, so these rates compare the students who chose each exam, not the courses themselves.
What’s on the AP Chem exam: the nine units and their weight
The multiple-choice section samples all nine units of the course in fixed ranges. Unit 3 carries by far the most weight, and Unit 8, acids and bases, comes second.
| Unit | Share of the multiple choice |
|---|---|
| Unit 1: Atomic Structure and Properties | 7–9% |
| Unit 2: Compound Structure and Properties | 7–9% |
| Unit 3: Properties of Substances and Mixtures | 18–22% |
| Unit 4: Chemical Reactions | 7–9% |
| Unit 5: Kinetics | 7–9% |
| Unit 6: Thermochemistry | 7–9% |
| Unit 7: Equilibrium | 7–9% |
| Unit 8: Acids and Bases | 11–15% |
| Unit 9: Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry | 7–9% |
College Board publishes unit weights for the multiple choice only. The free-response section is described by skill instead, and a single long question can draw on several units at once.
Calculator and equation sheet on the AP Chem exam
You can use a calculator on both sections. College Board’s calculator policy allows a scientific or graphing calculator for AP Chemistry on Section I and Section II, and Bluebook has a built-in Desmos calculator in both scientific and graphing versions. A four-function calculator is allowed but not recommended.
The TI-84 Plus CE is on College Board’s approved graphing calculator list, so it is allowed. That sets Chemistry apart from AP Biology and AP Environmental Science, where graphing calculators are not allowed for 2027.
You do not need to memorize the constants either. The reference information handed out on exam day has a periodic table and an equations and constants sheet covering units and conversions, atomic structure, gases, liquids and solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics and electrochemistry. College Board posts it with its reference information for each AP exam.
When is the 2027 AP Chem exam, and when do scores come out?
The 2027 AP Chemistry exam is on Thursday, May 6, 2027, in Session 2 of College Board’s schedule, and it runs 3 hours 15 minutes. AP scores come out in July.
What AP Chem score do you need for college credit?
Each college sets its own credit and placement rules. College Board calls a 5 extremely well qualified, a 4 very well qualified, a 3 qualified and a 2 possibly qualified; a 1 carries no recommendation. It lines the top three up with college grades: about an A or A+ for a 5, a B to an A- for a 4, and a C to a B- for a 3.
In chemistry, the score often decides which course you skip as well as whether you get credit at all. At UCLA, a 3 earns credit for introductory chemistry while a 4 or 5 earns credit for general chemistry, 8 units either way. At UC Davis, a 3 or 4 earns credit for CHE 010, and only a 5 earns credit for CHE 002A.
Check your college’s own policy, or College Board’s AP Chemistry credit policy search, before you plan around a number.
How this AP Chem grade calculator estimates your score
Only half of what this tool reports is certain. Your composite comes straight from College Board’s weights. Multiple-choice answers scale to 50 points, and the seven free-response questions share the other 50 in proportion to their points. The weights on screen are rounded to two decimals; across all 32,147 combinations of multiple-choice, long-question and short-question totals, that rounding never changes the estimated score.
The predicted 1 to 5 comes from a model, because there is no official conversion to copy. The tool treats composites as if they fall on a bell curve, then cuts that curve where College Board’s 2026 AP Chemistry results fall: the top 15% as fives, the next 31% as fours, then 30%, 18% and 6%. Where the curve sits and how wide it is are this site’s own choices, since College Board publishes neither figure.
Under the result, a line shows how far away the next score is, in composite points and as the fewest extra multiple-choice answers or free-response points that would get you there. Treat a composite a point or two below a line as sitting on that line.
Using an older practice exam
College Board’s released 2025 free-response set uses the same structure, three 10-point long answers and four 4-point short answers. Mark your answers with the scoring guidelines College Board publishes for that set, and the points go straight in. If a much older practice exam used different question counts, change the Questions and Rubric points boxes to match it and the composite rescales.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 70% a 5 on AP Chem?
No. On this calculator’s model a 5 begins at 72.7% of the composite, so 70% comes out as a 4, about three points short. College Board sets the real boundary each year and never publishes it, so a score that close could go either way.
What percent is a 4 on AP Chem?
About 57% of the composite on this model, based on College Board’s 2026 score distribution. A 3 starts near 43% and a 5 near 73%.
How rare is a 5 on AP Chemistry?
15% of AP Chemistry candidates scored a 5 in 2026, roughly one in seven, down from 17.9% in 2025. Only 7 of the 40 AP exams gave out a smaller share of fives in 2026.
Is the TI-84 Plus CE allowed on AP Chem?
Yes. AP Chemistry allows a scientific or graphing calculator on both sections, and the TI-84 Plus CE is on College Board’s approved list. Bluebook also has a built-in Desmos calculator if you would rather not bring your own.
How many points is the AP Chem free-response section worth?
46 raw points: three long questions worth 10 points each and four short questions worth 4 points each. The section is 50% of your score, so each free-response point is worth about 1.09 composite points.
Is there a penalty for guessing on AP Chem multiple choice?
No. College Board scores the multiple choice on the number of questions you answer correctly. Wrong answers lose nothing and blank ones earn nothing, so answer every question.
Can I use this AP Chem grade calculator with an older practice exam?
Yes. It takes points from any practice exam. If an older one had different question counts or point values, change the Questions and Rubric points boxes to match it and the composite rescales to the same 50/50 weighting.
